Happy Monday everyone,
Thank you those who attended our Friday coalition meeting. We had a great discussion checking in on our three campaigns, six months after we set our goals for them at the DC Community Wealth Building Day. Feel free to catch up on the notes if you missed it
here and find a summary of the big takeaways at the bottom of this email.
Reminder that we will meet next Monday, 5/11, at Southwest Library at 6 PM in the Large Meeting Room for our In-Person Work Session. Please come and help us integrate the feedback from Friday!
This Saturday, 5/9, there will be a parade to celebrate the legacy of Nannie Helen Burroughs, a true DC Community Wealth Builder, educator, and organizer in the 1920-40s, starting at 11 am at 5400 Nannie Helen Burroughs Ave NE and ending with food and games at 3 PM at Marvin Gaye Park. Sign up
here to attend. Would love to see folks there!
Thanks again everyone for all of your work. The progress is palpable and I am extremely grateful.
Best,
Abi
P.S. HAPPY BIRTHDAY SAM!!!!! Thank you so much for all you bring to this space. Don't know how we could do it without you. Wishing you lots of love and celebration today
Step back recap:
- Landscape Building: Defining CWB pillars for our network map has gone well! Some discussions should be raised about what exactly is the scope and purpose of the map, which can inform how we intend to use it and what it should look like. For example, is it for public or private use within the coalition? Or both? And where is there room for a discussion of values alignment as we map groups
- Public Education: We did a great job presenting about CWB at our Community Briefing and to a couple other groups. We have a good formula for how we talk about the vision and meaning of CWB. What's next is to scale up by building a communications strategy mainly using social media for now, and training a team of folks who can do presentations.
- Legislative Advocacy: We are on track to hit our goal of 25 testifiers for CWB asks this budget season! Fantastic job to everyone who has participated so far. We still need to work on relationship building with Councilmembers and their offices and can use more dedicated folks to carry on the advocacy work at meetings and help strategizing.
