| Luwam Kebade Luwam is a Lessee member of the Douglass CLT board and has lived at her limited equity cooperative for about 17 years. At the co-op, she has served on its board of directors, including as president, and testified before the DC Council in support of housing cooperatives. She shared how stable, affordable housing changed life for her family: “When my daughter was a baby, three of us were living in a small, expensive one-bedroom apartment with no place for a child to play. Then we found this home near 14th Street NW. It has been stable and affordable, and the location is so convenient. I do not drive, but the train is close by, and we can walk to food, services, and other daily needs.”
That stability helped Luwam raise her daughter, who has now graduated from high school and just started college, while also pursuing her own goals. While working as an Early Childhood Development professional in DC, Luwam earned her associate’s degree and is now taking classes for her bachelor's. “Because of the low price we pay for monthly housing, I could raise my daughter in a healthier way, work the hours I needed, continue my education, and spend time with her. I don’t have the same stress about money, and we are happy and healthy.”
“I never heard of a “cooperative” before I moved in, but now I think this is a great idea to have the opportunity for so many more people. …I learned about shared ownership by going to meetings and hearing from people who worked with us to support us, like Douglass CLT. Now, I want to try to support more residents who are in co-ops and are organizing to create their own cooperative.” |
