Dear all,

Hi there! How are ya?

We have a meeting with the director of DC Medicaid on May 17, at 2 pm. We really need to have the storytelling training put together by then. I think Nico's outlining things--what's our date for putting on the training? And does anybody feel comfortable filming video testimonials of the folks who are willing to tell their stories? (I want a fail-safe in case people can't ultimately make the May 17th meeting).

Let me know!

xoxox,
a.

Lisa,

Thanks for writing! My primary questions:
  • What's your name?
  • Are you a recipient of DC Medicaid or DC Alliance? Which?
  • For what procedures or treatments have you wanted insurance coverage but were unable to get it?
  • What did you do to find out whether you were covered or not?
  • When you found out you were not covered, how did you feel?
  • How would you assess the impact on your life for not having all your trans health care procedures covered? How has the lack of coverage impacted your physical health? Your mental health?
Ideally, I'd like to get all interviews video recorded. I want everyone who can come to the meeting to come, but I'd also like their permission to be filmed and show the video at the meeting if they can't ultimately come. It's probably likely that more people will say they can come to the meeting than will ultimately actually come.

I'd like to use this opportunity to get our phone/physical organizing team working with folks and building relationships--doing outreach to see if anybody has a story to share. Any objections to that?

Thanks!!!

xoxox,
a.

I can definitely do the filming of testimonials. Let me know when the training will be- I want to have a list of hypothetical questions to get feedback on from the whole community by the training day. Do we already have a list of Qs started?

Also resend me the google group invite?

Merci!

Nico,

Thanks for sending this out! I've attached the spreadsheet from the rally, which shows who wants to tell stories. I've also linked in the folks who volunteered to do phone/physical organizing, so that they can start making calls.

Yay! So! Phone/physical organizing folks: please write back letting me know which group of people from the spreadsheet you want to contact (e.g., "I'd like to take on entries 1-50, Andy!"). And let's set a deadline of having them all called by Thursday night?

Hi lovely people,

I am super excited about our story telling crew. We have a meeting next week with the Medicad office and we are trying to get ready for that important meeting by asking community members to share stories about Medicade.

We are planning on focusing this Sat's campaign meeting on story telling. I have a workshop that I have pulled together that I can give at this Sat meeting. I will send that around for feedback to you all by Tuesday.  The goal between now and Sat is to get folks to come to the Sat meeting and training who have personal stories to share. I have pledge cards with names of folks who said they have personal stories to share about health care. I will need some volunteers to help call folks and ask them if they want to come to the training and share their story.

Andy- are the pledge card list with the story telling box info saved online somewhere?

We are looking for personal stories with Medicad to prep for the meeting, but both allies and trans folks with personal experience should be at the workshop so we shape our messaging and stories together as a community. After the workshop or during we will want to coach certain people with personal experience to film their story.  I believe lisa has volunteered for this.   Yay! lisa- do you need anything from the group to help make filming happen this week?

Next steps- story telling meeting. is anyone free tomorrow from 6:30-7:30 for a meeting at Everlasting life? Goal of meeting- go over training, assign outreach tasks, prep for Sat training.

I'd second moving the EL get together to Wednesday. I can't make Tuesday.

Holding off on filming till you can get a crew together sounds totally reasonable. Nico? Thoughts?

Hi all-

In NYC until late Tuesday night, this is such short notice for everything! I didn't know about the Saturday meeting at Casa Ruby till now either- I'll be at Sweetlife all day and I don't know if I'll be able to get a crew together with less than a week's notice esp. if I won't be in attendance. Sunday is open if we aren't set in stone for Sat... and I do have a bunch of flex time wed/thurs/fri that I can help, whether that's actually filming interviews (even an iPhone can do a great job in a pinch) doing calls to remind people about the meeting, or other tasks.

There is no way we could hold off on the EL cafe meetup till weds is there? I would love to be there.

Story telling crew meeting-
I will be hosting a story telling prep meeting tomorrow at 6:30 at Everlasting Life 2928 Georgia Ave  Washington, DC 20001 from 6:30-7:30. this meeting is to prep for Sat's workshop. I will have the story telling workshop at this meeting and welcome feedback. Lisa- can you make this. If not, want to plan for a phone call to chat about filming! :)  Sorry for the short notice about this meeting. If some folks can't make this meeting, please feel free to just call me directly with questions!

Phone call crew! I love you all thank you for your amazing help building a campaign for trans economic justice.  Bellow is a calling script to call people to see if they can come to the story telling workshop on sat.  the goal is to Identify folks that will tell their trans health equality stories. The pledge cards indicate if folks are willing to share a story of why they support trans health equality. I believe many of these folks are allies, and some are trans folks with stories.  All stories are needed as we work to build a movement for trans equality.  Any questions on this- please feel free to give me a call. Nico Quintana-  202-957-5774.

Hi good afternoon/ evening-  (calls not made after 8:30.)
My name is ____ and I am calling from the trans economic justice campaign.  Thank you for coming to the rally for trans equality on March 30. Your support made a huge impact. We had over 250 people at the rally and 220 pledge cards for trans health equality were signed. Thank you for your support.  You mentioned on your pledge card that you would be willing to share a story about why you support trans health equity.   We are working to make Medicaid trans inclusive in DC, and we could use your help. Are you still interested in telling your story of why you support trans health equality?  We specifically are looking for folks who could speak to their experiences being trans identified using Medicaid in DC, but all stories are needed, including stories of trans allies.  We are having a campaign meeting and story telling workshop this Sat to prepare for a big Medicaid meeting on May 17.  Do you think you can come to the workshop this Sat?  The meeting is this Sat at Casa Ruby at 1pm. 2822 Georgia Ave NW DC.  Closest metro stop is Columbia Heights. We will be having a training and then story coaching and story filming. We hope you can make it!

I can also try to move the Medicaid meeting, if that works better for everybody. That's on me.

Please write back to me if you want me to do that.

Very sorry for the short notice! Definetly an area for improvment for us.  It was short notice due to the Medicaid meeting on May 17. Would Thursday at 6:30 work? I think we need to keep the Sat workshop time and date for now, but we can talk about future filming and working with folks with stories to tell. I think the workshop will be the very first step in an effort to document and tell our stories. Thanks or your help with this!

Dear all,

I'm really confident we can get this meeting for DC Medicaid together by May 17. A couple of notes.
  • Let's move that Everlasting Life meeting with Nico to Thursday night (May 9) at 6:30.
  • Nico will put on a storytelling training on Saturday.
  • We only really need about 3-4 trans community members who have been on Medicaid to tell their stories. And we can get that.
  • If this timeline is too intense for folks, don't worry. It's quick, because I'm starting a job on May 20 and have to have a huge project done by June 17, so May 17 is the best, latest date for me to do this. But if May 17 is too much, Nico and I (and whomever else can work on this) can nail this down, video-recording and all.
  • If you're on the phone/physical organizing team, please refer to Nico's script, which is below, as you make your calls (and, of course, feel free to modify so long as it feels natural/comfortable for you).
And I'll see you all, hopefully, either May 9 (at Everlasting Life) or May 11 (at Casa Ruby).

YAY!!!!

xoxoxox,
andy
