Hi All!

We’re starting a new paddling “program” (used in the loosest sense of the word)  on Monday nights at the end of October.    The reason we’re doing this is because we’ve identified a lack of opportunity for adults new to paddling to access weekly practise and skills learning.  When I first started paddling I was fortunate enough to fall into the right group of people at the right time which I feel it was just lucky timing.  We’re hoping this program will take the luck in timing out of it.  This is also an opportunity for people new to the club to get more involved and meet other paddlers.  Note that although  the concept was developed for adults, it’s not exclusive - anyone (who is a club member) is welcome!!

The basic concept is:

Meet and be ready to jump on the water at 6pm (Monday nights),  paddle for 1-1.5 hours then go to a local pub or pizza joint for a meal afterwards.

An email will go out each week on this google group to confirm the venue, the skills we’ll be practising and leader so make sure you let them know on (or before) the day if you'll make it so we know to look out for you.  Feel free to join for the paddle or food or both :)

The main choice of venues will be Kingston Beach/Browns River, Lower Sandy Bay beach (Long Beach Southern End), Errol Flynn Park (Marieville esplanade), Broken Bridge or Carlton Beach.
Skills and activities will vary from week to week (mostly dependent on participants) but will include things like strokes, rolling practice, deep water re-entries, games and of course food!

First Week (Monday 30th October) will be at Lower Sandy Bay (meet at the Southern End near the shed and abultions block). Call or text Mel to tell her you're coming. 0430 219 633.  As it’s the first session we’ll probably focus on forward and turning stokes and playing some games followed by wood fired pizza on the beach!

Everyone is welcome so please make sure you're a club member (http://derwent.canoe.org.au/membership/) before coming along.  If you know of anyone who is keen to get into paddling then this is actually a really good opportunity for them and we’d love to have them join us so please feel free to pass this on.

Look forward to seeing you out there!

Mel

Hi Mel,

What a great initiative, people like you and activities like this are the really best things about volunteer clubs.

I have an old (almost new condition) 4m carbon slalom boat (you may have seen me trying to paddle it haha), that you guys can have (it may even be the clubs already - I really don't know??) if you want to give it to a newbie or a kid without a boat.

Cheers

Mike
