SEASON’S GREETINGS CARDS to PRISONERS ADDRESS LIST
of WRITERS AND LIBRARIANS IN PRISON, OR THEIR FAMILIES
December 2, 2008
The following appeal “Guidelines” are drawn from this year’s
International PEN Writers in Prison Committee (WiPC) holiday campaign,
announced by IFEX Communiqué vol 17 no 45 on 19 November 2008 as
follows: “'Tis the season - International PEN's Writers in Prison
Committee (WiPC) is also asking that you send greetings cards to
writers in prison or their families. For more details of this
initiative, email: wipc (@) internationalpen.org.uk.”
Guidelines for Greeting Cards to Prisoners’ Families
Please send general greetings or holiday cards to one or more of the
family members listed below. Post cards are best, as letters are
sometimes opened in search of remittance money. (Here’s a tip: Try
using just the cover portion of a holiday greeting card as your post
card.) Airmail postage is 94 cents.
Your message could be as follows, or create your own in Spanish or
English, avoiding any specific reference to politics:
No se desanime. [Prisoner’s name] no es olvidado. Aprecio su amor por
los libros y la lectura.
Espero que el año 2009 traiga buenos relaciones entre nuestros paises
y nuestras bibliotecas.
Atentamente,
[your name]
Bibliotecario / Bibliotecaria
[If you’re male] If female]
NOTE: Be sure to INCLUDE the “~” TILDE MARK above the “n” in “año.”
Without that diacritical tilde, ano = anus. :-(
TRANSLATION:
Do not be discouraged. [Prisoner’s name] is not forgotten. I
appreciate his love of books and reading.
I hope that the year 2008 brings good relations between our countries
and our libraries.
Sincerely,
[your name]
Librarian
Include a return address, should the prisoner’s family be able to
reply. If you get a reply, please send a copy to:

Links to websites that provide details of the individuals’
imprisonment are given in International PEN’s website at

section. The WiPC Caselist for January – June 2008 is also available
at that site.
Clearly the PEN writers’ organization is active in urging the release
of imprisoned writers. In similar solidarity –
• The Committee to Protect Journalists, Reporters Without Borders, and
the international Coordinating Committee of Press Freedom
Organizations campaign for the release of journalists:

http://www.rsf.org/article.php3?id_article=25781, and

• The Network of Concerned Historians campaigns for the release of
imprisoned historians:

• Labor union associations campaign for the release of trade
unionists:

However, the American Library Association declines to call for release
of the imprisoned librarians. ALA’s most assertive and most recently
stated official position expresses contentment with their imprisonment
in a July 27, 2004 letter to the Cuban Foreign Minister, as follows:
“We thank you very much for your attention and assistance to ensure
the health and welfare of these detained individuals.” See this
exchange of letters at
http://groups.google.com/group/Cuba451Letters/web/have-a-nice-20-years-in-prison-says-ala.
Should you wish to urge the ALA to join the international call to
release the library prisoners, you can e-mail ALA President-Elect
Camila Alire at
cal...@att.net or write to her at 7070 West Ridgeview
Circle, Sedalia, CO 80135-9134.
