You may have read or heard of the recent visit to Cuba by members of
our Congressional Black Caucus. Reuters reported as follows on the
group's visit to the Martin Luther King Center in Havana:
"HAVANA (Reuters) - U.S. lawmakers met with Cuba's foreign minister
and laid flowers at a Havana memorial to slain U.S. civil rights
leader Martin Luther King on Saturday during a visit aimed at
improving relations between Washington and the communist-ruled
island."
Confiscations of Spanish shipments containing of Dr. King's biography,
and the court-ordered burning of this publication, which follow the
March 2003 crackdown on dissenters and independent libraries, is
already documented elsewhere in this Google Group's web pages and
files, but I have now included in this message and on the
Cuba451Letters web site documentation that President Carter's personal
gift also was confiscated.
Dr. King as a symbol is revered in Havana, but his ideas are -- in the
words of the customs seizure document -- "against the general
interests of the nation."
