you are asking me to provide my company's database structure, which i
cannot do..
i can simply advise you the steps which i performed i.e.
1. Moved the tables from all schemas to dbo
2. And added the object and tried to generate it and it was crashing..
i'm little surprised why you are so hesitant in sharing the code when
it is open source. We can work together and infact many other
developers like us and make a better product for whole community.
If you will take time in posting to sourceforge then pls email me, so
i can at least start working on it and advise you comments. Whatever
you feel appropriate you can incorporate in your final version and
balance you can discard.
As i told you we can work together and remove the dependancy on
codesmith by creating our own classes. By not sharing the code at all,
we are loosing the real essence of open source. where all have the
right to see the code and advise their feedback.
you see, giants like Microsoft also ended up by making Office formats
open source...

Rest assured that he will release the source at some stage but for now
I think we all need to be patient until it is in a fit state to be
released or there is a very real danger of ending up with some hybrid
that regresses backwards into an unusable pile of dung.
No offence intended here but let's bear with Andrés a little longer.
Cheers

I came to know abt this product through your wiki site only and i'm
very thankful to you for that..
I read the history of this product also and came to know that other
developers from initial team are no more interested in improving it
and Andres is the only one who is working, for which i highly
appreicate the efforts which he is putting..
but don't you think that if more then one people will put their brains
on it, a more better product can come up. That is what is team work
all about..
I'm really not satisfied with the reason that just bcos he is working
on some major changes, he cannot share the code. Atleast he can email
the code to me (if cannot post it publicly due to time)
I'm sorry to write this that If the code cannot be shared then it
should not be labelled as Open Source.

There are many people here in addition to Andrés who can help you, but you need to explain the issue in more detail. Don't spend your time explaining the value of open source, instead, explain the issue:
I haven't read (nor do I have the time to read) the whole thread, so you may have answered some of these questions already.
What object Type are you creating? (Editable Root, etc.)
Are you generating from a Table, View, or Stored Procedure result set?
Does the table have a Primary Key?
Have you tried making a VERY Simple table to see if that produces an error as well?
Have you looked at www.cslagenwiki.com?
Did you start a new project in CSLAGen, and save it?
Can you post the XML that CSLAGen creates?
I understand your concern about the sensitivity of your company's database. There is NO database schema out there that is so complex that it needs to be hidden, but that's another story. If you make a SIMPLE table, and that fails to generate, then you could send us that XML and we wouldn't find out your secrets.
Good Luck!
Kevin
pls read the post

To simulate the problem, pls refer to the steps which i mentioned to
Andres.

I think we are running in circles. I already explained how to simulate
the problem and that is all i can do. Adventureworks is also having
schemas, you can try to move all tables from that in dbo and try
running your generator, it should crash..
Unfortunately, this post is becoming counter productive and it is not
giving us any results.
Although i'm still surprised that what is holding you to email the
sourcecode if you have no intent of hiding it, the only thing i can
write at this moment is that I will definately wait for you to post it
on some public site in couple of weeks..

It's a normal table and i have even tried out tables with very less
columns like 3 and result is same. Even i have tested it on other
computer and result is same. I'm trying to generate vb code..

Appreciate your concerns about this problem, From my side i have
provided the details and even the snapshot was emailed to your Id. In
any case, let us close this issue here as it is consuming lot of time.
Better option is that I will wait for couple of weeks till you post
your code publicly and then i will test it on my database. This will
save everybody's time.
Thanks for your help....

I took the time to read the thread, but still don't see that you;ve fully explained the issue. The MS Error Report info doesn't help us in this case. The CSLAGen XML would be priceless!
You seem to want to solve this on your own using the source code. So, why not just decompile the app and use that?
I respect all the developer and contributors in the forum and expect
the same from others. Despite of the fact, that I didn't agreed with
reasons for not emailing the source code which is open source, i tried
to close this matter by simply waiting, as no point of arguing it's
only a matter of couple of weeks..
Will appreciate if we don't waste our time in the argument which will
not give us any results. Comments like decompiling a open source
project seems like a bad joke and it is not at all professional.
Additionally, it is not just that i want to solve only my problem but
i want to contribute to this project so all can benefit. I have posted
other source codes also on rocky's site and you can search that in his
forum for my posts. Rocky has also added me to his contrib project,
where i am suppose to upload the code which i posted in his forum.
Again, i don't want to post a lengthy post on open source topic. So
let us close this topic and simply wait for couple of weeks

Vinod, this can be a very frustrating process, and I’m happy to read that you ready to help out with the CSLAGen project. But also let’s get back to your problem.
As an old CSLAGen user (haven’t starting using the newer versions yet) I know that there probably could be some setup issues. And my guess now is that it’s more of some kind of weird setup problem then anything else. Since one of the first things that happens when you to generate the code is to start CodeSmith, that could be a potential problem. I think most people that have tried to help you overlooked that it could be a setup problem (or CodeSmith not being able to run or read templates), but it might be that they know that you configuration has worked earlier and therefore ignored this.
So Vinod, my question is have you got it to work anywhere/anytime with your setup?
If yes, under what circumstances?
Have never used the Generator with any ‘weird’ characters, do you have any of those in the objects you are trying to generate.
From your description it seems to fail either on the first object it tries to generate (and very early in that process) or before the generation starts.
If it’s the first I would suspect there is something ‘weird’ with the first object it tries to generate.
If it’s the second it not unlikely that it’s some type of setup issue (the reason for my first question). Since I haven’t used any of the latest versions I don’t know what kind of setup problems there can be with kicking of CodeSmith.
Are you using it under Vista? Do we have permissions set right?
If it is a setup problem, there are so many avenues to go down!
And, Andres, I think that in earlier versions that he might have connected to the database while generating the code, I might be wrong on that one though, and I don’t know if that has changed in newer versions.
Vinod, it can also be type of locality issue. Sometimes ‘American Software’ doesn’t deal with the Universe that well at times (also known as the rest of the world, in the rest of the world). They work well in there world (also known as USA in the rest of the world).
Don’t really want to flame USA (since I live here myself), but when you call your national champions world champions. ;-)
Skeptical Swede
I offered to help out of kindness. I'm sure that is true for most of us here. But I feel that you are not understanding the dialog. I've spent my time reading your thread, as you requested, offered specific suggestions to help, and you have not taken them. Instead, you have written me a lecture.
I'll continue to try to help, whether or not you have posted code to Rocky's forum. I'll even offer to do an MSN session with you if you want. This is not about whether or not you contributed, it's actually not about you at all. It's about the appropriate way to ask for help, the appropriate way to offer it, and the appropriate way to receive it. I completely respect your choice to wait. If you change your mind, I'll be here.
thanks for your kind words. It is not that i will stop working bcos a
particular software is not working. I was using CSLA before also and
using it now also.
I thought csla gen will be able to save my time in doing the
repetitive work of creating bo's and stored procedure but never mind i
can wait..
Hi Joakim,
Version i'm using is the last one posted by Andres so that is the
latest one (in 2007).. I'm not using Vista, I'm using windows xp..
This is the first time i'm trying to use CSLA Gen and it is not
working.. Previous issue as mentioned in my other post was that
cslagen is only reading default schema of dbo whereas i created other
schemas also in my database..
To solve that issue, i created a small script and moved all by tables
in dbo schema and after that schema was displayed in cslagen but as
soon as i was trying to generate it was crashing..
I'm sorry to write that i won't be able reply on this crashing issue
further as I have already spend lot of time in this forum in solving
this issue with no results..
it's better that i simply wait for couple of weeks and test out the
code myself..
On Feb 20, 11:53 pm, "Kevin E. Welsh" <kwe...@welshtechnologies.com>
My suspesion is that this is problem in setup somehow.
Can you start the CodeSmith independent of CSLAgen?
