I haven't answered your specific questions because they are somewhat
difficult to answer. But here are my thoughts:
 
- Any moderated groups success depends on a very subjective opinion of who
is allowed to participate. A huge topic in itself.
-Yes - the average joe cryonicist is indeed attracted to drama, judging by
the number of responses to some topic like "religion-and-cryonics.".
- harder topics like the science/tech (or any other *useful* stuff ) will
have lesser participation. Lower participation is not necessarily bad given
that for most part we are avoiding "trivial" discussions.
- the most productive people IMO may to too busy to browse through lots of
post, so lesser participation and fewer posts are perfectly fine.
