All,

I have completed the 1st quarter of my CrowBox deployment and would like to share the data I've collected.  If anyone has any suggestions for a tracking template on excel, I'm all ears, since I did this data collection by hand and haven't figured out a proper template that would collect everything properly and wrap it up in a nice bow yet

Each 'month' is 4 weeks of 7 days each, or 28 days. (with the exception of month 1 which ended up being 29 days).

I notated every successful and attempted land recorded on each day for both crows and magpies. A successful land is any time a bird is able to eat from the box. Attempted lands are any other physical interactions with the box that do NOT end up with food being taken. Basic weather was also tracked for each day.

I then gathered all the attempts by week, and then by month. I'm going to provide only the monthly numbers, but I do have everything broken down to the day if there is interest for it, as well as recordings of most days, and notes about said daily interactions

Month 1 summary: (29 AUG- 26 SEP)
total days on phase 1: 16
total days on phase 2: 13

Weather- Sunny/Mostly Sunny Days- 27
overcast/cloudy days- 1
cloudy w/ precip days- 1

Total Land Attempts: 746
successful crow lands- 98
successful magpie lands- 513

Month 2 summary: (27 SEP- 24 OCT)
total days on phase 1: 2
total days on phase 2: 26

Weather- Sunny/Mostly Sunny Days- 21
overcast/cloudy days- 4
cloudy w/ precip days- 3

Total Land Attempts: 687
successful crow lands- 18
successful magpie lands- 497

NOTES: due to battery issues and box not opening for the crows, they gave up touching the box for almost a whole month, even when set back to free feed. It took until almost halfway through month 3 on free feed for them to start interacting regularly again. you can see the different in numbers from month 2 to 3

Month 3 summary: (25 OCT- 21 NOV)
total days on phase 1: 4
total days on phase 2: 24

Weather- Sunny/Mostly Sunny Days- 18
overcast/cloudy days- 6
cloudy w/ precip days- 4

Total Land Attempts: 829
successful crow lands- 240
successful magpie lands- 432

TOTAL FIRST QUARTER NUMBERS
Total Land attempts: 2262
Successful crow lands: 356
successful magpie lands: 1442

{quick note: I want to add that the numbers for month 4 (almost completed) are far different and in the crows favor than all of quarter 1}

This might be a good case to develop an app you can use on your phone to track behaviors (ethograms) for the crow.
It could be downloaded in order to do statistical analysis.

Hi,

I’ve created a basic ethogram app for monitoring crow behaviors. This is a beta version, and it runs on laptops, desktops, and mobile devices.

To begin, click Start to open an observation session. You can enter the Crow ID, session details, and location data, then click Start Recording. The app includes 14 behaviors—click a behavior button to start timing it, and click the same button again to stop. When you’re finished, click Stop to end the observation session.

At the bottom of the screen, the Analytics button lets you view summary information and download data in various formats. The History button displays individual observation sessions.

I’d welcome any feedback or suggestions for features you’d like added or changed. I hope you find the app useful.

You can access it here:

Best,
Edward
