Welcome to the 2013-14 Speedskating season, starting with a Sue Ellis
camp is always a great way to get a start on a new season. With the
new season I'd like to welcome also our new Level 2 coach Patrick
Angle. His hard work and dedication to the club is already
recognized, he has worked hard to get his level 2, with a great year
of coaching behind him I personally appreciate all the help Patrick
has given me personally as well as his efforts for all of our
skaters. Thanks to Patrick and congratulations on this
accomplishment.
If you have not already started working out it is time to dust off the
bicycles, running shoes and other gear and start your aerobic base.
Please be sure to rest for 2 days before the Sue Camp. The off season
is suppose to be about active recovery, we have one session on
Saturday Mornings over the summer, this ice time is key to all
skaters, over the summer we will be working hard on skate skills,
form, and balance. As always, summer is the key to a successful skate
season. The primary focus over June should be getting a good aerobic
base and establishing your training plan for the year. The coaches
are always available to help you with this plan so let us know if you
want some help. I have included a general summary at the bottom for
those who may want to put their own plan together.
Many of our skaters are now reaching their 3rd or 4th year of skating,
when a club gets to this level where there are many experienced
skaters to follow and emulate. With the addition of two Senior Men in
our ranks there are many skaters who will benefit from having faster
skaters to practice with. Since they come from inline they will also
learn a lot from our club because we have some excellent skaters with
great form. This is also an Olympic year, that means that we will
probably see a lot of new skaters. As always I will do my best to
make sure that everyone is able to improve to the level they desire.
Many of you will see great improvements this year, the base has been
laid and improvement for many will come rapidly.
The key to everything is to develop a training plan and sticking to
it. Many years ago when I said i would try to get something done a
wise man asked me if I was just going to try to do it or if I was
going to do it, I thought about it and answered back, "I will do it."
I developed the mantra, "Stop trying an Just Do It!. You can't just
wish things to happen, you have to make a plan and then stick to your
plan. If your plan is not working, then you need to work on your
plan. Hard work and dedication will pay off, challenge yourself, set
realistic but high goals. Don't worry about tomorrow or the next
race, just ask your self, what have I done for my skating today, then
go work your plan.
As always I am honored to be your coach, I have seen amazing
improvement in everyone, I can hardly wait to see what you do next.
Let's sit down and work on that training plan.
