Help stop Capital One and I will keep you up to date with what is
happening as this goes along
My 18 year old son answered one of their mailings for a student credit
card, and he promptly went out and maxed the the $200 limit of the
card. He didn't make a payment in six months. So now, they say he owes
them over $700. They are charging $29 late fee for each month he does
not pay. Since that pushes him over his pre-approved limit, he is also
charge $29 over-limit charge each month. He called to make arrangments
with them to pay off what he owes, but they were unwilling to work with
him.
I understand he took on the obligation and he should pay back what he
owes, but I feel Capital One is 1. Taking advantage of ignorant young
people by offering them credit without making clear the consequences of
not paying. I know they send them a contract that outlines those
charges, but they also know that no one reads those things, and they
write them in a way that discourages people from reading them. 2. In
effect charging a usurious interest rate of close to 400%. I know they
call them fees, but the effect is the same.
I am so mad I can't see straight. My wife and I also have a Capital One
card and we have gotten caught by the overlimit, late payment trap. But
never again. We are paying it off and cancelling the card. If I ever
get another credit card, it will be through my credit union. Not
Capital One. What's in your wallet? If its a Capital One card, you'd
better get it out fast, because its about to take a bite out of your
rear end.
As a member of New York City's legal community, I've heard of the
commendable job Robert Arleo has been doing to protect the public from
collection agencies and those criminal credit card companies. He's
been going after them for years.
