For the past few weeks, CTRU has been meeting, organizing and taking
action. On March 18th, the Clayton Transit Riders Union went to the
workplace of District 3 Commissioner Wole Ralph to share with the
public the injustice he has perpetrated on residents of Clayton. On
March 26th, CTRU visited a country club gathering in the Lake Spivey
Community of Clayton County –a community that voted for 4th District
Commissioner Michael Edmondson. We shared information with the Lake
Spivey residents about Edmondson, and urged them to tell him to vote
to keep CTRAN running.
CTRU, and the Atlanta Public Sector Alliance now call on everyone in
the region who believes in human rights, social justice, and economic
justice to join us for a Candlelight Vigil to help kickoff the 2nd
Phase of our struggle for CTRAN. On March 30th at 730p at the Clayton
County Commissioners office located at 112 Smith Street, Jonesboro,
Ga., CTRU and APSA will gather to reflect on our fight to preserve
CTRAN service, but also to initiatethe next phase: fighting to RESTORE
service should it actually stop after March 31st.
There’s little doubt that our actions are amounting to something. One
might even ask the question: Are the actions by riders to confront
power and raise the profile of rider-issues in the media driving
politics from below?
The recent article by Paul Crawley
http://www.11alive.com/rss/rss_story.aspx?storyid=142226, suggests
that they are. He writes,
“It was last fall when Clayton County Commissioners voted to end their
bus contract with MARTA, saying they could no longer afford it.
But growing protests over the past few weeks led to Rep. Roberta Abdul-
Salaam's HB 1393, which passed the House by a vote of 142-14.
It authorizes a July vote by Clayton County citizens on whether they
want to approve an extra penny sales tax to pay for the transit
system.”
The “growing protests over the past few weeks” have been riders and
workers standing up!
We hope the legislation passes the Senate and that the Governor signs
it. But even if that happens, the Clayton County Commissioners must
decide to use the power to levy a new tax for transit. There will be
a need for referendums/votes at the county level. For these reasons,
CTRU believes we must continue to build organization and power to hold
the Commissioners accountable to human rights principles.
We Demand the Commissioners of Clayton:
1. Use the $2.4 million they offered GRTA for CTRAN!
2. Join The MARTA System Permanently!
3. Provide County-wide Service!
4. Rider/Worker Representation on MARTA & Clayton Board!
5. Fight for State Funding For Public Transit!
6. Provide More Paratransit Service!
Join Us for Our CandleLight Vigil!
