Casual Monthly Tournament

Dear Columbus Go Club,

After talking with Devin, Alex and a couple others, it seems like there may be enough interest to have a small, regular casual tournament. The goal is to let people play more serious games and win glory. 

Here are the specifics:

• Self-paired—With a small number of people everyone tries to play everyone else. If there are too many people, we would split into two or three groups, each group having its own tournament
• After each game, players record their results on a posted chart. After everyone has played everyone or time runs out or a clear winner emerges the tournament ends.
• No need to be on time or stay until the end, though tardiness may make it harder to win.
• No clocks, but players should be mindful of time.
• Handicaps at players’ discretion. Rules at players’ discretion.
• Entrance could be free or like 5 dollars. If it is free entrance, we can provide a free tea or bragging rights for the winner. If people want to pay to enter the winner takes the money, second place regains their entrance fee.

I was thinking either the first or last Sunday of each month at the Tea Zone during the normal meeting time (1-5). Of course, I would take care of all administrative things. The club I was a member of in Korea did this with much success. 

We could start this month or next month. What do you think?

You will want to have defaults for the case that the two players don't agree (on handicap or use of a clock etc) but you're right, probably not really necessary, we're go players and not chess players :-)

Fantastic. Thanks for the suggestion, if there is disagreement default can be handicapped. Seeing some approval and no disapproval:

We’ll have our first monthly tournament on August 27th, 1:00 to 5:00. May the greatest player win.
