SCA hires students to work as interns for the government. Check out
the description:

The Student Conservation Association (SCA), along with the United
States Geological Survey, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the US Fish &
Wildlife Service, and the National Park Service, offers GIS/GPS
internships that will enable you to work and train all over the country
with professional field staff. As an SCA GIS Intern you might spend
time on Flathead Native American Reservation in western Montana
gathering wildland fire fuels data or map critical wildlife habitat for
the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. These opportunities and more await
you.

A GIS/GPS internship has long-term benefits beyond the experience
itself. SCA Interns acquire marketable and practical skills that will
look great on a resume.

Other benefits include:

· Paid travel to and from the site
· A biweekly stipend
· Free housing
· Free or low cost health insurance
· Possible student loan forbearance and AmeriCorps Education
awards of $1,000 - $4,725
· Valuable training & certifications
· Possible academic credit
