JOB DESCRIPTION

A. BASIC FUNCTION :The GIS Technician Intern will provide support to
the GIS Manager on complex projects involving analysis of spatial
resources, data capture and management and map production by working
approximately 20 hours/week between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm.

B. PRIMARY JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (List in order of importance.
Indicate essential duties and responsibilities with an asterisk. Show
percentage of time. Time and importance may not necessarily
correspond.):

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES %


1. Performs data collection, attributing, digitizing, data conversion
and editing of GIS datasets.* 50%
2. Assists GIS Manager in analysis of spatial resources, data capture
and management, and map production. 2%
3. Obtains data from various sources/organizations, creates metadata
following FGDC guidelines. 8%
4. Performs map production, develops mapping templates and other GIS
products. 5%
5. Compiles source information to project specifications and utilizes
software to modify and edit graphics, attributes and annotation.* 15%
6. Aids in the development of various GIS applications by working with
multiple departments. 8%
7. Assists in the development of Gahanna's Internet/Intranet GIS. 2%
8. Performs field work utilizing global positioning systems. 8%
9. Performs various administrative and clerical work and other duties
as assigned by Supervisor. 2%
10. Regular, predictable and punctual attendance is required.

C. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Education, experience, certification,
training, & specific skills to fulfill the essential duties and
responsibilities of the job):
· College level coursework in GIS and or relevant experience (Prefer
minimum of junior level status working towards a Bachelors or Masters
in Geography, Engineering, Computer Science, Cartography or other
related field)
· Experience with ESRI ArcMap 8.x or 9.x (View / Editor / Info)
· Experience with Microsoft Office
· Working knowledge of map projections, coordinate systems and
cartographic principles
· Familiarity with geocoding and geographic database design
· Valid driver's license and dependable transportation; ability to
drive a City vehicle
· Experience with Internet Map Server Software (ESRI ArcIMS),
Autodesk Map Series / AutoCAD, GPS Systems, Map Objects and Visual
Basic preferred

E. ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION:
This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force
occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible
amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping,
kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing,
pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions;
vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by
means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information
at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing
and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving
small defects and/or small parts, assembly or fabrication of parts at
or within arms length, operation of machines, determining the accuracy
and thoroughness of work, and observing general surrounding and
activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental
conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, and atmospheric conditions.

F. ACCOUNTABILITY/IMPACT: Due to the nature of the position, there is a
moderate degree of accountability with this position. Errors in
judgment will be addressed by the GIS Manager.

G. JOB CONTACTS: This individual will have moderate contact with
Department Heads, other local agencies and outside contractors.

H. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: This position will receive regular
supervision.

This is a year-round, part-time opportunity working approximately 20
hours/week between 8:00 and 5:00. Weekend/evening work may be needed
on occasion. The pay range for this position is $9.00 - $12.00/hr,
