Thank you again for your support of the Colour of Poverty – Colour of Change ( COP-COC ) project – “Breaking Down Barriers By Racialized Communities Through Building Community Research and Knowledge Capacity”, funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage.
Over the past four months, we have received and incorporated feedback from our community partners across the province on the first part of our community-based research project - our survey seeking to explore and better understand employment barriers facing Indigenous Peoples and peoples of colour across Ontario - including Durham Region, Hamilton, London, Ottawa, Peel Region, Quinte Region, Thunder Bay, Toronto, Windsor-Essex, and York Region.
A special thank you goes out to our advisory committee for this project - Amy Casipullai ( OCASI ), Ada Chan ( Chinese and Southeast Asian Legal Clinic ), Samya Hasan ( Council of Agencies Serving South Asians ), Shalini Konanur ( South Asian Legal Clinic of Ontario ), Moya Teklu ( Black Legal Action Centre ), and michael kerr ( COP-COC Coordinator ) as well as our research advisory for the project - Yogendra Shakya, and the research teams at the Institute of Social Research at York University and the Diversity Institute at Toronto Metropolitan University respectively.
As we strive to build community-based capacity to address the growing racialization of poverty and the resulting increased levels of social exclusion and marginalization of racialized communities across Ontario, we also recognize the role that data need play in our advocacy efforts. As such, we are pleased to announce the launch of our Employment Survey, whose link you can find included below. Great care has been taken to ensure data confidentiality and security, and all survey results will be end-to-end encrypted.
To qualify, respondents must identify as Indigenous or as a person of colour and must live in one of the regions described above. The survey will start collecting responses on November 9th, 2022, and will close on February 9th, 2023. Upon the completion of our 3-month data collection phase, we will bring together the results from our online survey – as well as learnings from a series of focus groups held across the province – in a final report with priority recommendations. The findings will also be presented at a knowledge sharing conference, where community agencies and community members involved in the project will have a chance to discuss both barriers and needed solutions to fair, equitable and just employment opportunity in Ontario. The report will also be circulated through our networks and will be used as a tool when advocating for fair, equitable and just employment in Ontario.
As we work together to address and redress the growing structural and systemic ethno-racial inequality across the province, we hope that you can support us with distributing the survey, both through your networks and to individuals who access services at your organization, should they so choose. As internet access can be a barrier to participation, should you require a paper copy of the survey to distribute at your organization, please contact our Project Coordinator - Namrata - at - nam...@ocasi.org, and they will provide a printable copy of the survey, along with information on survey storage and a mailing address to send the surveys to.
In terms of languages, the survey will also be available in Arabic, French, Punjabi, Simplified Chinese, Somali, and Spanish in the coming weeks.
A list of frequently asked questions about data collection, privacy, and the project can be found at the end of this note. Please find the link to our survey here - https://blocksurvey.io/survey/1KMzzhbgxMpWMUXjUJz3S9AoQV3aPReTWg/74ffdea2-bee8-48 89-85a3-3e8766a0b6f0/r/l

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are we doing this project ?
We are seeking to understand the employment barriers that Indigenous Peoples and peoples of colour are facing in the current Ontario labour market, as well as to explore solutions on what legislation, policies, practices, supports and strategies can be put in place to most effectively address these barriers. We recognize that centering and hearing from community members who are directly impacted by these barriers is an essential part of community-based research, and that hearing these concerns will help to put pressure on decision makers and stakeholders to address systemic racism in the current labour market.
How will the data be collected ?
All survey data that is collected will remain confidential. Survey data will only be reviewed by the research team and language translators for the project, and all data will be de-identified, so that any identifying information is removed prior to analysis. The survey data will be stored on a password-protected survey platform server, which will be deleted 18 months after the publication of the final report.
How will the data be used ?
We will bring together the results from our online survey and focus groups and publish reports with our findings. The findings will also be presented at a conference, where community agencies and community members involved in the project will have a chance to discuss both the barriers as well as solutions to effectively address the employment barriers faced by workers in Ontario. This will be incredibly powerful as multiple stakeholders and policy makers will be present at the conference, and will have a chance to reflect, engage with, and make decisions based on the content that is presented. The reports will also be circulated through our networks and will be used as a tool when advocating for fair, equitable and just employment opportunity in Ontario.
I would like to print out paper copies of the survey. How do I go about this ?
Please email - Namrata - at - nam...@ocasi.org to request a printable copy of the survey. When you receive a printable copy, you will also receive instructions on how to store completed surveys, and a mailing address to send your surveys to, once data collection is complete.
What languages is the survey available in ?
The survey will be available in - Arabic, French, Punjabi, Simplified Chinese, Somali, and Spanish in the coming weeks.
