Hey all,
A few of the regular mentors are not able to make it for the remaining sessions of the Dojo. Liam recommended a doodle poll to get an idea of the number of mentors available for the last three sessions. If you think you will be able to attend then please highlight the days you are available in the doodle poll below.

I would also like to say thanks to Paul Tipper and Shane McVeigh for their help during the last couple of weeks, it was greatly appreciated!

Are any of your kids good enough to step up as mentors?

Do you get a lot of newbies each week?

Can you ask any of the other dublin Dojo's to send you kids to help out?

Cool and suggest you appoint mentors from within your students as soon as possible for the basic HTML intros / scratch etc. as stepping up as a mentor  is part of CoderDojo. :)

Can I take it from this that there is no Dojo session taking place in UCD this evening (Friday 22nd February)?

Jonathan,

Is there any possibility of it running on a Saturday or Sunday?  I may be able to help with
activities that will attract more mentors.  Possibly a much bigger dojo with a lot more
activities, but every two weeks rather than every week, until mentor levels allow weekly
comfortably.  UCD has a big supply of mindstorms kit.  Can we tap into that?

Also any parents here willing to help on the admin side so that it is less work for the
organiser?  Bray have a small team of parents helping, which makes a huge difference to
what they can do.

We've found in Science gallery that having both 'Scratch' and 'Projects' works a lot better
than having just one.  It's easier to get mentors for Scratch and raises the energy/fun in
the room.  Benefits to both groups AND to mentor retention.

Do you want to talk off-list?  Include Liam (Bray) and Noel (DCU) and see if we can plan
something good.  I loved UCD being  a meeting ground for people from different dojos
and I'd like to see that re-established, say from 30th March???

Hi Jonathan,

My name is Guilherme and I'm a 28 years old software engineer from Brazil.
Here in Ireland I work for Accenture as a Senior Software Engineer and I'm also a MSc student in UCD (MSc in Advanced Software Engineering).
I have extensive experience with software development, mostly with Java and related technologies, and would like to help out acting as a mentor in the CoderDojo.

Just let me know when and how I can help you guys!

Thanks,
- Guilherme

Hi Guilherne,

Excellent.
I think our best shot is to have another series of four Dojos starting in April, on Fridays, and see how it goes.

Some things need to happen to re-launch.

- We need to get a pool of about 12 mentors so that we have a good mentor:student ratio without mentors having to be there every time.  Are there others on the MSc who will help?
- We need to restrict tickets.  If we have 4 mentors saying they will come for a particular Friday that means max 20 tickets for children issued.
- We need to get parents involved in organising, so that a parent is responsible for the tickets, and automatically gets a ticket for their child.  Otherwise it is too much work for Johnathan (or me).
- We need to agree that we are doing 2/3rds Scratch 1/3rd projects.  It is a tested formula that is working well in Science Gallery.

Hi James,

How many mentors do we have already?
I will talk to the guys from the MSc and also from Accenture to see if we find more volunteers.
About getting the parents involved, do you have an idea on a good way to tackle that? Do you have contact of some of the parents? Related to that, is there a facebook page for the UCD CoderDojo already? I think that would be a good way to communicate with students and parents, also to get them more involved.

Count on me on helping you out!

Thanks,
G

The pool is about 6 with 4 showing.  Johnathan can give you better figures and names.

Yes.
There are a couple of parents to approach who brought their child to every single session.

Johnathan does.

If so, then let them organise it.  Mentors are in short supply.  In Bray there is a parent organised admin team that makes the dojo happen.  Mentors just have to say they will turn up and do so.

The scheme that works is to get mentors to commit to coming a week in advance.  Then tickets are issued 5 days in advance according to mentor numbers.

Count on me on helping you out!
UCD has the potential to be a stellar dojo.  Running on a Friday it can be a meeting point for mentors from other dojos that run on Saturdays (Bray, UCD, SG) .  If you can help it tap into a student population of mentors and if parents come on board it will shift the dynamic in a really good way.  Looking forward to it.

Makes sense, James.
I'll try to get some more mentors from the MSc, etc... I hope to succeed on that :)
If there's something else that I could help in the meantime just give me a shout.

April 6th,

2/3rds of the class will be doing MIT Scratch

The other 1/3 will be doing projects, probably mostly in python.

hello,

Are you still looking for mentors?

I have a BSc in Comp App from DCU.

I don't have much industry coding experience, but I would be happy to come along and help out in any way that I might be able to.

Thanks,

Jonathan, is Friday 5th April a good date to restart in principle? Plan to do a series of 4 sessions?  Say we set a target of a pool of 12 mentors, expect 8 typically, and with 40 ticket limit?
