Brazilian mandolin master Paulo Sá will be teaching a Choro and
Mandolin workshop at Acoustic Expressions, in San Diego, on Saturday
January 28th from 10 AM to 12 PM. Cost will be $25 per person.
Paulo Sá, founding member of the Rio de Janeiro based modern Choro
ensemble, Rio Trio, and former columnist to Mandolin Quarterly will be
giving an in-depth, hands-on look at the infectious melodies, rhythms,
and history of Choro music; a uniquely Brazilian instrumental music
made popular in the late 19th century, and still played today. Choro
pre-dates both Samba and Bosa Nova. One of its biggest stars was the
mandolinist Jacob do Bandolim, brought to life in the U.S. by David
Grisman's compilation of this great master. Mike Marshall is also a
great proponent and superb interpreter of Choro.
Paulo has both a masters and doctorate degree in Brazilian Popular
Music from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Paulo will be in
San Diego from Jan. 25th to the 31st, and will also be available for
private lessons. You may contact Paulo directly at paul...@comcast.net
or Gary Payne at: garypay...@mac.com
