Official: The IRU is a part of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg
From the 6th of June 2016 the International Romani Union - IRU, got the confirmation from the ERTF (European Roma And Travelers Forum), and with that the IRU is a part of the European Council in Strasbourg.
After the 10th IRU Congress in Skopje in March 2016, and after the election of the new Presidency of the IRU as well as the election of Mr. Zoran Dimov as its President, definitely shows that the IRU is getting back on track and strengthening of the IRU as a serious Organization. In the previous months, the activities of the President Mr. Zoran Dimov, the members of the Cabinet as well as the Delegates of the IRU, give their first positive results, after the long period of stagnation and passiveness from the previous leadership in the previous 10 years. In that period the previous leaders of the IRU with their passive attitude slowly lost all their positions and the credibility of the IRU which was getting built from the very beginning. At the last 10th Congress of the IRU, the new leadership leaded by Mr. Zoran Dimov made a plan and a strategy to retrieve the reputation, credibility and the positions of the International Romani Union.
Already at the beginning they set a platform for the realization of the Project„Democratic Transition„ where at the next IRU Congress in 2020 they will have elections for representatives and functions in the IRU through the most democratic way possible and the Electronic Voting.
Through that way all of the future representatives will have a greater and a wider mandate. The head of the Committee is Mr. Grattan Puixon, a renowned Romani activist who is the First General Secretary of the IRU in London in 1971.
Then from March 2016 and until now the IRU Leadership started with their politic offensive for consolidation and revitalization of the IRU. Intensive meetings with high functioners and institutions from Europe (EU, EP, EC, Brussels, Strasbourg, Berlin, Bonn, Cologne, Stockholm, Gothenburg, Oslo, Vienna, Sofia, Belgrade, Maribor, Budapest and other cities), are slowly making progress and with that the IRU is slowly gaining their old positions and credibility.
One of the positive effects is the position in the ERTF which is a part of the European Council in Strasbourg.
The sincere and true intentions of the IRU and its leadership leaded by Mr, Zoran Dimoiv are actually to recognize and to accept the true representative of the Roma from the whole world.
Also, after the long years of schism and the misunderstandings between several fractions of the IRU, this leadership of the IRU also sends its message that their doors are always open for everybody with good intentions, because the IRU is one and we are all IRU.
