The Mensch Who Moved the City
Tonight’s presentation looks at the life and work of community activist, transit maven, and Chulenteer Benjamin W. Schaeffer. Ben, whose 5th Hebrew yahrzeit begins this evening, was an author, photographer, historic preservationist, public servant, and subway hero. Writer and poet Lisa Smid will chronicle her 10.5 years with the man who documented and influenced city transit for over 40 years. One of only two frum MTA transit workers, Ben's accomplishments include NYPD Auxiliary Sergeant, Brooklyn Borough Transit Advisory Committee, 70th Precinct Community Council Treasurer, TWU Local 100 Vice Chair, MTA Medal of Excellence recipient, and nominee for the Daily News Hometown Hero Award.
