I was hoping that syncing would work, since I have databases at home
and work, but that hasn't worked, and it doesn't look like any of the
competition works well enough. I'm trying DevonThink now.
What I like most about Notes is the ability to copy-and-store from any
page with a keypress (which I don't think I'm gonna find elsewhere),
and the fact that Notes stored everything in one place on the disk.
It seems to me that DevonThink doesn't store things in one place. Is
that true? Am I just doing things wrong? I find it difficult to
believe that it doesn't copy the actual items.

I think DT can optionally keep data internally, but you might ask the
folks at DT.
And you might also look into Yojimbo and Mori. The main weakness IMHO
of Yojimbo is that you can only create folders one level deep.

I have tried Yojimbo, and I agree with you on the folders. Like the
others, they also didn't have the copy-and-store from a keypress
feature, which is so convenient in Notes. Also, in my testing, Yojimbo
didn't do any better than Notes did at syncing.
I haven't checked out Mori as yet.
It allows you to copy pdfs, images, documents, emails, etc right into
the program so you do not have to worry about losing links. It is a
preference setting. It also has something the programmer calls The
Lexicon which is like an active index that you can go to and find
which entry has a certain word. It is amazing.
Another added feature is the ability to link or copy/paste emails
directly into Journler. This program is getting so many features that
I am having problems not using it for all of my work. However, it does
not have OmniOutliner features that I live by for lists and things.
I would suggest you take a look at Journler. You can find it at
www.journler.com. Or go to the forums and participate in a very active
beta program. The forums can be found at http://journler.com/
community/forums/index.php.
Good Luck,
Terry
(All comments and conclusions are based on my own experience, so if I
had a problem and you didn't, (1) good for you, and (2) I was probably
being stupid.)
I've tried Yojimbo, Mori, Journler, and DEVONThink personal &
professional. For my needs (which are, mostly, related to throwing
stuff into a box and being able to find it again when I need to), I'm
going to go with the DEVONtechnologies product. I'm still deciding if
the extra features of DTpro are worth the cost to me. I do like the 3-
pane Mail-like view. *sigh* I would miss that in moving from Notes.
Plus, it looks like syncing my database between work and home might be
easier on DTpro. One problem I had with Notes (and Yojimbo, for that
matter) was that syncing didn't work as well as advertised. With
Stickybrain (which I've had since the free .Mac release), I always
just copied the entire database back and forth. There is a program,
DevonSync, which I did not try, that syncs over LAN, apparently using
Applescript. This bodes well for me being able to invent something to
do that non-locally. DTpersonal, apparently, does not respond to
Applescript.
It looks to me like I can easily keep a database in another location,
so I can just store my stuff on my iPod or iDisk or something like
that. Better than syncing any day. :-)
As an aside, the email-based support people at DEVONtechnologies were
very helpful while patiently and quickly answering my questions. They
were a major factor in deciding to go with DT.
Thanks to all those who saw this thread and have sent me
recommendations.
