for the production of Geography of Loss a mixed media theatre piece written by Karen Zelas.
EXPRESSIONS of INTEREST SOUGHT
Geography of Loss is biographical and autobiographical, based upon the experiences of the author’s extended family. It portrays the journeys of a displaced people, their losses and their hopes, and the legacies of these for subsequent generations. It speaks to cultures which have been dispossessed and persecuted, and to those in whose communities the immigrant seeks asylum. The work has a strong sense of place, which includes present day Canterbury with its recent losses, uncertainties and hopes for the future.
The script has been described as “moving”, “poetic”, “beautiful”, and as using language in humorous and playful ways. It has been the subject of professional script development. Staging encompasses movement and ensemble embodiment of a larger cast, and makes use of lighting effects and the projection of visual images.
A seeding grant is to be sought to pay the initial part-time salary of a Producer, whose task it would be in the first instance to raise funds for production. A good knowledge of funding bodies and the use of social media in fundraising would be helpful. Expressions of interest will be included with the grant application. The production will be mounted in Christchurch in the first instance.
