Message from Steve, K9DCI

Dad, W9EHS was an early CFO member, a good friend of Jim Ricks and I wonder if anyone has copies of the articles discussing the advantages of the various colors of antenna wire? I thought I saw some quite a few years ago. . . Steve, K9DCI

Why would anyone use an account they rarely use to correspond to someone?

I don't find Theo. W9EHS in any of the CFO records, but that doesn't mean he wasn't a member, he probably was an original member before they started assigning membership numbers. The same thing happened to me N1EA / WA1DRS and Marvin Carter, W4ZMQ, around 1980 we both got busy, I started shipping out in the merchant marine as radio officer, so my amateur radio activity was very rare at least until about 1983 when I picked up an Amateur radio transceiver which I took on ships with me. W4ZMQ worked for General Electric and was sent to Iran to work on electrical generation power plants.

You might fill out this page for your father: https://silentkeyhq.com/main.php?p=bin/NSKALookup.php ENTER W9EHS at the top.

Attached are QSL card image of your father's cards.

Yes, we know a bit about the origins of CFO and FOC but more info is welcome.

I finally got this to the top of the stack. .   It helps to be able to copy behind. . . (:-) I just barely made the 20 for Extra right before they dropped it to 5 wpm.

I'm not too surprised that I don't see dad's call in that 82 rooster. I know he did some CW at that time, don't recall that he did much. I remember he talked with a lot of Chicago area locals on 15 side band that I talked to as well.

Also, at that time, I think Jim may have been living with his son down in Cobden IL.

It was sometime back then that I got an e-mail from his son because I had posted something about Jim on one of the bulletin boards some time earlier.  ,

I saved a file with some things that I collected about Jim.

My dad also knew Ben Woodruf, whom I met at the Chicago AES Store Managed by Doc (Harold) Wessels, and I do recall there was some tension about the origins of the TO Keyer and Hallicrafters.

The antenna wire color thing was a spoof, the way my dad explained - what color wire radiates best, or something like that. I thought I saw references to it many years ago on the early Internet.

I'll have to look at that Kurt Sterba paper closer to see what he says about some things I'm familiar with. Searching on “color” I see where he talks about the wire color for hiding the wire against various backgrounds.

Lastly, I wonder if the current members know of the story about the origins of the CFO and the relation to the FCO (First Class Operators).  I didn't poke around to see if it is written anywhere.

Steve, K9DCI, No there's nothing in the https://silentkeyhq.com/ about your father, you should put something.

Maybe some of the still alive members of CFO will help out with memories. Members: email Steve K9DCI <nosko...@yahoo.com> about any memories about his father, Theo. W9EHS a regular QSO buddy of W9TO and a member of CFO before it got organized - like myself and W4ZMQ, Marvin Carter, we all met on 3518 kHz and then about 9 PM Jim started in on the same frequency and the groups kind of merged for a half hour or so.

I 'spoze I should change that sig. I have 3 accounts and look at all frequently, but categorize things that way.

WOW! Wood Dale! I was 3. I want to say that I almost remember the box number.
..
I remember that QSL and should have at least one. It says a ?1/2 Zepp. Later he had what he called a Windom. Where is that from?
Dad said he operated at 35 wpm. I think he said that he could sometimes copy up to 60.
Dad also designed and build an electronic keyer around the same time Jim and Ben did the flip-flop version, mid to late 50s. I still have it. I wonder if there would be date codes on the tubes or other parts.
.. .. ..
Dad’s used 50C5s (or something close), I think a 35W4 and those same mercury wetted, octal base relays. However, it used RC timing instead of the TO keyer flip-flops. I don’t think he ever fully explained it to me, but after he passed I got it and his schematic and figured it out. As I recall, it used a clever way to get the weighting correct. If I recall it also used the relay contacts to switch the RC circuits so timing was consistent. I’m sure the filter caps are fubar now.
..
There was a “Woodruf Keyer” for a while. I can’t recall Ben’s call off hand. I think Ben was displeased because Jim took the design to Hallicrafters, but that memory is foggy.

.. .. ..
What I recall dad saying was that among some CW operators, the First Class Operators were thought of as rather self-superior or snooty the way one had to be invited, or voted in. The CFO was a satirical response. I don’t recall him saying anything about any animosity exchanged between the groups.
I'm not sure if I got my dad's info into the archive. It ended strangely.
