Union Workers and Their Children to Make Homemade Picket Signs on the Eve of May Day Rally WHAT: A work session to draw by hand and then assemble hundreds of signs for the immigration rights' demonstration on May 1. WHEN: 4 p.m. -- 8 p.m., Wednesday, April 29. WHERE: 333 S. Ashland, Chicago ( Ashland and Van Buren), in the auditorium in the basement. WHO: Workers who are members of the union Workers United and their children.
CHICAGO -- The auditorium in a historic union building will be filled with the sounds of staple guns, ripping duct tape, squeaking magic markers, and children's laughter on Wednesday, April 29. Union members and their children will gather there to draw by hand and then assemble hundreds of picket signs for the May Day rally for immigrants' rights. The members of the Chicago and Midwest Regional Joint Board of Workers United will make signs in several different languages and prepare other material for a large union contingent in the Friday, May 1 demonstration.

There will be plenty of opportunity to interview those doing the work, to record audio, to shoot video footage, and to take still photographs.
BACKGROUND: Workers United has taken a strong stand in support of immigrants' rights. That stand has been welcomed by the union's membership, which includes many immigrant workers.
