** Press advisory **
the latino organization of the southwest CALLs FOR A RENEWED CAMPAIGN IN THE STRUGGLE FOR immigrant RIGHTS AND URGE SOUTHWEST SIDE RESIDENTS AND GROUPS TO JOIN THE MAY DAY MARCH.
WHAT: The Latino Organization of the Southwest, founded and led by immigrants, officially launches its “Get Informed, Get Organized, Get Mobilized” campaign. The first step is the opening of its Immigrant Information and Assistance Center. Families will receive updated information and support on all immigrant-related issues through programs and innovative approaches. A newsletter will provide local immigrants with a much-needed outlet where personal stories, analysis and relevant information will be featured. Also, an organizing drive will establish local committees equipped to respond to the changing needs of the immigrant’s life.
WHEN: Monday, April 13th at 10 a.m.
WHERE: Latino Organization of the Southwest, 6507 S. Kedzie Ave, Chicago
WHO: Leaders and community residents from Gage Park, Chicago Lawn and West Lawn
WHY: Current economic downturn threatens to derail the struggle for legalization once again. The immigrant rights movement needs to reassert itself to avoid a repeat of the aftermath of September 11 when the Bush administration’s war against terror made immigrants almost invisible and targeted them.
