The lowest price gas seen this past week was at the HEB in Burnet at $2.79 / regular unleaded.  Many other places were much higher than that.  I guess that large volume bulk purchasing that HEB is able to do makes a huge difference for the consumer.
I hope that everyone was able to take advantage of the tax free shopping over the weekend.  We spent the greater part of Sunday afternoon and evening purchasing items on our school supply lists and then shopping for the traditional , 'school clothes'.  I am of the opinion that all stores should have lounge area's for parents of teenagers, located throughout the stores, where a parent can sip on a soft drink, read the news, keep track of spending and occasionally nod the head yes or no in regards to prospective clothing.  It takes a very long time for teenagers,  especially girls, to locate the 'kewlest' clothing available and that doesn't even include trying anything on to see if it fits.  Teenage girls have the uncanny ability to determine whether or not something will 'fit' by simply looking at it hanging on the rack.   Unfortunately, that ability fades with adulthood and anything that looks like it will fit on the rack will be two sizes too small at the 'try on' stage.  With fall just around the corner, all parents of school age children can look forward to shopping for school clothes again in just a couple of months.
'Kewl' clothes these days appear to be used clothes.  I wish I had kept my Jr. High and High School Wardrobe as they would be trendy hot items today.  Bell bottoms, faded, tye dye, fringe and worn through and through to the point of ragged.  It is difficult to see (and purchase) a pair of 'new' jeans hanging on the rack that are faded and worn through with holes with a $40 price tag knowing that you could find the same thing at a garage sale for 50 cents.  Young people can somehow tell the difference between the new ragged clothes and used ones -  Other than the price, I cannot.
School began in Cherokee this past Monday.  I am sure that everyone is glad to be back in their old routine and sports and all of those other wonderful activities will resume once again, giving school staff, students and parents alike, more to do than they can possibly manage!  This past school year went by in a blur as I am sure this one will for all involved.
Family night will be Wednesday, August 9 at the Cherokee Baptist Church.  James Low and Charles Perry will be frying fish.  Church starts at 6:30pm.  Bring something that goes with catfish and join us.  Kenley and Ruby Kroll are proud to announce the birth of their grandson, Kaden Matthew Meyers.  Matthew weighed seven pounds and nine ounces.  His length was 20 1/2 inches.  His proud father is Dwayne Kroll.
Sylvia Rhoades from Llano and Naomi Walden from Waco spent the day last Tuesday with their cousin, Sue Rhoades.   Conord and Zaida Bollier from Houston visited Sue Rhoades and Flora Bowden last Saturday.  They had their daughter and two granddaughters with them.   Thomas and Elaine Bowden visited Flora Bowden Sunday.  They also attended the Slaughter funeral.
Byars Walters is now in Warm Springs Rehab. The address is: 5101 Medical Dr., San Antonio, TX 78229. His room phone # is: 210-595-2303.  Let us all keep Byars, his family and his friends in our prayers.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Baptist Church for Floyce Slaughter,  We extend our sympathy to Leroy and the family.  Floyce was Clyde (Skinny) Estep's sister.
When I and my family moved to Cherokee, Floyce wrote the Cherokee News and did a wonderful job of it.  I used to look forward to Wednesdays when the paper would come out so I could read her column.  I came to know and admire a lot of people through reading Floyce's column before I had ever met them.   Floyce was a gracious hostess and she also made the best cookies in the world.  She will be missed.
