Recently the Federal Government overturned approval for a wind farm in
Victoria, based on the rather flimsy excuse that the farm would
endanger a rare parrot.

Obviously there is opposition to the construction of wind farms but
does that opposition have sound arguments against this alternative
energy technology?

There are a lot of problems with wind farms. Not only do they chop up
birds, they are horrendously noisy. Peopel near the windfarms near
Crookwell hate them. In the UK they are removing a lot of them due to
public discontent. In a country like Australia Solar energy is a far
better option and even if it was just used in the hotter monthes to
run air conditioners and other forms of refrigeration, it would have a
significant impact on the CO2 gases in the atmosphere.

However, whilst coal burned electricty is still the cheapest method in
Australia it is going to take a lot of effort to change peoples
practices.

Like most alternative energy sources today, wind power still has a long
way to go before it becomes acceptable to the general population.
However, should our climate reach a critical stage then we may not have
the luxury of choice - when it comes to a solution for our energy
requirements.
