The Snowy Mountains Hydro scheme has been an important icon to
Australians ever since the project was started. It is relevant here in
the Bega Valley due to our close proximity to the Snowy Mountains with
some local residents involved in the building of these facilities.

It's about to be sold off!

One participant at Dr Matthew Notts RSL meeting a week ago was very
emphatic that the Snowy Hydro scheme should not be sold off to the
private sector nor should it be sold off to overseas interests.

What are your views on the subject?

Here's what one prominent Australian thinks about the sell-off!

ABC Online, Thurs May 25

Snowy Hydro sale a done deal, says Howard

The Prime Minister says most Australians probably do not support the
sale of the Snowy Hydro scheme, but he insists it will proceed.

John Howard is facing internal pressure from within the Coalition,
including from close personal friend Bill Heffernan, to abandon the
sale of the Australian icon.

As well, three Independent MPs and the Australian Greens want to force
the New South Wales, Victorian and federal governments to reverse their
decision to sell their shares.

But Mr Howard has told Parliament it is a done deal.

"I understand the concerns that have been expressed and I acknowledge
that this is probably an issue where, on the surface, a majority of
public opinion would oppose what is being done by the three
governments," he said.

"I think the legal basis for what we're doing is pretty sound and I'm
not disposed, and the Government's not disposed, to change our
position."

THE SNOWY HYDRO SHOULD NOT BE SOLD. Why would we want to sell something
that not only works but also makes money. Further more, it is only
operating at 13.5% of capacity as an electricty producer. Imagine the
benefits in reduced green house emissions if it were to run at even 50%
capacity. If it were placed in the hands of private enterprise all they
would be interested in is making money, not protecting the environment.
Therefore they would most likey put the money into the gas fired power
plants in La Trobe and Laverton.

So keep the snowny and upgrade it so that more green power is produced.

There seems to be an ideological position that government and
infrastructure don't mix. (Perhaps they see infrastructure as a
private opportunity that government shouldn't interfere with?)
Instead of investing in things like fixing the Pacific Highway or
education or health, the federal government, and the state governments,
want to get rid of infrastructure that is useful, beneficial and
lucrative - like Snowy Hydro, Telstra and many others down the track.

It seems plain dumb. I just don't get it.

Well....the good news is that enough 'people power' made their views
felt within the political establishment - Snowy Hydro is not going to
be sold, at least for the time being. This is a very satisfying win for
ordinary Australians.

I couldn't agree more.
