For those of you who live in the Carthay area, please note that a
coyote was spotted this morning (about 7:30 am, Thursday Oct. 4) by
residents on their daily morning walk. The coyote was walking around
the corner of Commodore Sloat and Hayes Drive in Carthay Circle
(Commodore Sloat is the street which is behind Carthay Center School
and Hayes intersects with Commodore Sloat near the intersection of
Foster Drive). The animal was not acting aggressively.

In today's Los Angeles Times, there was an article about coyotes in
suburban or urban areas.

Subject: Coyote in the Carthay Area?

Pet Cat Killed! A Coyote to Blame?
A pet cat (actually, half of a pet cat) was found on a lawn in the
1100 block of Stearns (south of Olympic, Stearns is between Fairfax
and Crescent Heights in Carthay Square) early Friday morning. It
appears to have been killed by a coyote. Coyotes have made the rounds
of the Carthay and Miracle Mile neighborhoods before, reports began in
the summer of 2005 and have continued, off and on, ever since.

Below is a report from that was sent out in August of 2005. The
suggestions and contact information are still valid.

"...Basically there is little we can do. Officer Randall of Animal
Control says chances are that the coyote will be hit by a car before
we can trap him.
Some do's and don'ts if there is a coyote around:
Do not leave pet food outside
Pick up all fruit from trees as the coyotes will eat it.
Make lots of noise to scare him away if you seen him/her.
Keep pets indoors (especially night, dusk, and early morning)
Keep an eye on small children

The coyotes are most likely coming from Rancho Park or Hillcrest
Country Club right down Pico. He could be living in the alley or an
abandoned house.
Animal Control does keep a complete map of all sightings and incidents
regarding pets killed by coyote, but he must hear from everyone
individually (no hearsay info). Officer Randall wants to hear from
everyone who lost a pet to what appears to be a coyote attack or
anyone who has seen a coyote. He needs dates and times. He handles all
of LA County so sometimes it takes him a few days to get back to you.
But he will get back to you."

Please report wildlife sightings and issues to: Los Angeles Animal
Services at (888) 452-7381
Officer Randall, PHONE: 213-485-5767

COYOTE UPDATE:
Coyote sighting tonight at 9 pm on Del Valle Drive. Del Valle is an
east-west running street in Carthay Circle which is located north of
San Vicente and south of Wilshire and is between Fairfax and Crescent
Heights (AKA McCarthy Vista).

A resident out with her dog saw the coyote walking west on Del Valle
on the opposite side of the street. It stopped and looked at her and
her dog and then continued, turning north on Crescent Heights Blvd.
(aka McCarthy Vista on that block).

Cayote's on my street? Yeeks!

Can they climb or jump over a wall? Maybe a dumb question but I know
nothing about them.
Our property is completely gated but we have 3 small dogs who come and
go thru a doggie door.
Should be concerned about the Coyote jumping the wall or getting
inside my property?

Regarding FENCES, from the LA Animal Services link (below):

FENCES
Coyotes are capable of scaling or jumping fences upwards of 5 1/2 feet
in height. They can be deterred by increasing the fence height to at
least 6 feet and adding an angle at the top facing outward at 45
degrees and 16 inches wide. (For fences over 6 feet check local fence
height laws, a variance may be required.) Bury the bottom of the fence
at least 12 to 18 inches underground and line the trench with rock to
prevent the coyote from digging underneath. An apron underground at
the base extending an additional 18 to 24 inches out from the fence
should be added as well.
