From the Conservation Insider Bulletin:
Conservationists: Remembering John Costlow
North Carolina's coast lost another leader this year with the passing
of John Costlow, former director of the Duke Marine Lab and mayor of
Beaufort. During a long life filled with good works, Costlow was
known for achievements from helping create the citizen conservation
group now known as Carteret County Crossroads, to securing the
preservation of the area which was to become the Rachel Carson
National Estuarine Research Reserve. CIB's editor, then a legal aid
attorney living in New Bern, came to know Costlow as a "green
Republican" who helped save North Carolina's Coastal Management
program from attacks by some short-sighted development interests
during the Martin Administration. John Costlow's legacies will live
on in the natural beauty of our coast.
