Notations for some Varnams and kritis. Open Source. You can download, modify, contribute.

How to typeset carnatic notation? Which software to use? Techniques, Ideas, workflows for creating beautiful carnatic sheet-music.

Background:

Notation. Rare.
Score/Notation for Carnatic music compositions like Varnams, Kritis, etc. are not widely available. Apart from few printed books, some web resources exist for Sahityam/Lyrics, but finding notation for even very popular (and old) compositions online is very difficult.

Notation. Difficult.
Carnatic Notation system is very simple. With a simple pen and paper one can start writing down scores.  But, software tools for writing our music is not mature and wide-spread. People struggle with word processors and spreadsheets/tables to write notation.

I created Carnatic Scores repository with two basic objectives:
  1. To craft and share Scores. (At present notation for some Varanams and Kritis are ready. some in progress)
  2. To come up with better ways to write music (Read the articles in the wiki)
Jump in, if you are interested.  Your thoughts, ideas, scores and corrections are most welcome.

Lakshmanji,

Github is a programmer's site for version control. I'm using it to help my step-by-step process of creating score.

Once each notation is completed I should move it to my site (beautifulnote.com) etc where it's easy to view/download. (unfortunately beautifulnote is down for now)

To access finished scores from https://github.com/ananthp/carnatic_scores  , you'll have to click on the folder (ex: brahma_kadigina-mukhari) then choose the PDF file, then click 'view raw' button.

I've attached a few completed scores here for you.

Cheers,
Ananth

Thanks Ananth.  NIcely done.  I have a lot of notations for songs, most of them in Tamil, with some in English and others in Telugu if you are interested, to add to your repository.
