CARNATIC MUSIC FOR EVERYONE –UNIQUE AND INNOVATIVE MUSIC CHAKRA
Chennai is the heart of carnatic music.Apart from the Rasikas, does the common person understand even the basics of carnatic music? Is knowledge of Basic Music necessary to appreciate the various concerts in the city?
Mr.L.S.Ramesh, a Post Graduate from the reputed Indian Institute of Technology-I.I.T.Madras has designed an Innovative Carnatic Music chakra (SriSaraswathi 72 Melakarta chakra) after more than six years of effort ,to help anyone, children to elderly ,without any Music knowledge to very easily SEE,LEARN and PLAY carnatic music (and also western) by using this Unique Chakra.
This chakra has been very much appreciated by Music legends Dr.Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna,Prince Rama Varma(Trivandrum),Shri.Garimella Balakrishna Prasad(Annamacharya project Director-Tirumala Tirupathi) and others.
The 72 Melakarta (Main Ragas) have been neatly depicted in the form of a chakra(Wheel) wherein the ragas are clearly shown as ‘dots on the keyboard’.Playing the dots on your keyboard will bring out the melody of the raga.
Carnatic Music (South Indian classical ) is a veritable ocean by itself and Shri.Venkatamakhi (Indian Musicologist) is credited with classifying the various scales (Ragas) into 72 categories which are again classified as belonging to various Chakras (Wheels) named as Indu chakra (Indu:-Moon),Netra Chakra (Netra:-Eyes) etc. totaling 12 chakras.
Each chakra represents 6 major ragas.

Now all these can be played on your keyboard by yourself without help of any teacher.Says Ramesh.

Many carnatic ragas have their counterparts in western Music. For example ‘Keeravani raga ‘ which is numbered 21 and falls under the Veda Chakra has its equivalent as Harmonic Minor.
Carnatic music with its 72 Melakarta scheme has been the foundation for learning and practicing classical music. It is no easy task to memorize the chakras and associated ragas for a beginner. SriSaraswathi 72 Melakarta chakra has simplified this to a great extent .

while there is no doubt that a Guru(Master ) is very much needed in any sphere of art, it is also important for a beginner to try to grasp the basics of music with imaginative visual aids .

Mr.Ramesh says this chart is an output of trying to teach students to play the keyboard.
The use of this chart also helps Children to grow creatively and intellectually.

Mr.Ramesh and his wife Mrs.Sridevi use the money generated from sale of this SriSaraswathi 72 Melakarta chart to help underprivileged children through FACES (Food,Aid,Clothing,Education ,Shelter) a Service started by this couple.

Learn to play music and put a smile on their ‘FACES’ says Mr.Ramesh
