I’m Timothy Troy from Milwaukee. I’m a theatre arts professor, playwright, and director of plays, operas, musicals, and audio theatre. I teach at Lawrence University where I have the pleasure to be surrounded by serious learning and great music every day. I grew up listening to Irish Trad music with my father, William, who instilled a love for the music, history, and culture of Ireland. Since being Visiting Professor at the Trinity College-Dublin in the early 2000s, I have attended many informal pub sessions in Dublin and elsewhere in Ireland. I started playing whistle about 5 years ago. My goal: when I retire and I’m spending more time in Ireland, I hope to have a sufficient repertory of tunes to actually join a set and play well enough that I seem to be in the right place.
Many thanks to CelticMKE for offering their yearly music and cultural classes during the run-up to Milwaukee Irish Fest. I dearly appreciate my first two instructors, Shannon Heaton and Brett Lipshutz –patient and generous teachers and inspiring musicians. I frequently listen to my (signed!) 1979 vinyl of Mary Bergin’s Fedóga Stán with wonder and amazement. The classic sound of Micho Russell goes back to my father’s albums, so I revisit those recordings frequently. Michael McGoldrick – whether he’s playing pipes, flute, or whistle his music always sounds like joy to me. Lately, my favorite tune is The Coachman’s Whip - I love the range and movement. It feels good to navigate the long ascending run at the end of each section.
