Postdoc position in Earth system modelling of Coastal “Blue Carbon” Vegetated Ecosystems for CO2 Removal and Climate Change Mitigation

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation of public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90 %) and the state of Schleswig-Holstein (10 %) and is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine sciences. Currently GEOMAR disposes over an annual budget of approx. 80 million Euro and has approx. 1000 employees.

The research unit Marine Biogeochemical Modelling of research division 2: Marine Biogeochemistry is offering a Postdoc in Earth system modelling of Coastal “Blue Carbon” Vegetated Ecosystems for CO2 Removal and Climate Change Mitigation, starting on August 15th 2022.

Job Description

We are looking for a scientist with strong expertise in at least one of the following aspects:

  • numerical modelling of the ocean
  • numerical modelling of the climate response to carbon dioxide removal (CDR)
  • the use of numerical models or their output to investigate global ocean biogeochemistry
  • the use of numerical models or their output to investigate the climate system

The position is part of the German Alliance for Marine Research (Deutsche Allianz Meeresforschung; DAM) Research Mission “Marine carbon sinks in decarbonization pathways” sea4soCiety project (Searching for solutions for Carbon-sequestration in coastal ecosystems). The research will involve working as part of a vibrant interdisciplinary team at GEOMAR and collaborating with other marine research institutes in Germany and elsewhere. The scientist is expected to develop new parameterizations to represent coastal “blue carbon” vegetated ecosystems in a state-the-art Earth System model (FOCI). The scientist is also expected to help develop scenarios where these ecosystems are expanded for CO2 removal and climate change mitigation purposes. Model simulations are then to be performed using the new parameterizations and scenarios.  This work will be informed by experiments and observational studies, as well as by social, political, legal, economic and ethical studies performed by other research groups participating in the Research Mission, and with whom close collaboration is expected. The Research Mission includes a range of networking activities among scientists and with stakeholders, including industry and policymakers. Model results will be analyzed and published in the peer-reviewed literature, but will also be used to inform stakeholders and society about the potential, benefits and risks of expanding coastal “blue carbon” vegetated ecosystems for CO2 removal and climate change mitigation.

Qualification

Required:

  • A PhD in natural science subject
  • Experience in physical and/or biogeochemical modelling or Earth system modelling
  • Willingness to work with external partners as well as to present results at international conferences
  • Excellent English language skills (oral and written)

Desired qualifications:

  • Knowledge of coastal “blue carbon” vegetated ecosystems
  • Experience in working with an interdisciplinary team
  • Experience investigating carbon dioxide removal approaches
  • Proficiency in German or the ability to acquire a basic understanding would be beneficial.

The position is available for a funding period of two years. The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class 13 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a full-time position. The position is basically divisible. Flexible working time models are possible in principle.

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel seeks to increase the proportion of female scientists and explicitly encourages qualified female academics to apply.

GEOMAR is an equal opportunity employer and encourages scientists with disabilities to apply. Qualified disabled applicants will receive preference in the application process.
