ABSTRACT
Carbon dioxide removal continued to gain momentum this week, with major funding, project development and commercial activity spanning ocean alkalinity enhancement, BECCS, enhanced rock weathering, biochar and direct air capture. Frontier awarded $2.1 million to four projects addressing technical barriers to scaling OAE, while Australia committed A$23.4 million to emerging carbon capture and removal technologies. New developments included Switzerland’s first commercial BECCS shipment, Brazil’s first enhanced rock weathering project, Avnos’ largest hybrid DAC deployment, and new biochar initiatives across India and New Zealand. Research highlighted both opportunities and challenges, from the ecological feasibility and industrial integration of OAE to weakening natural carbon sinks, climate impacts of CDR and improved monitoring approaches. Meanwhile, UNEP warned that 1.5°C is likely to be exceeded within the next few years, reinforcing the need for rapid emissions reductions alongside carefully governed CDR to enable a potential return below the threshold.
