“ The way countries account for removals in the land sector includes the natural CO₂ fertilization effect on managed lands. Forests take up more carbon when CO₂ levels rise in the atmosphere. But that effect is already accounted for in the whole concept of net zero and is on the order of 4-6 Gt/yr. So if countries also account for that CO₂ in their targets, warming won't stop at net zero.
Countries need to stop accounting for this natural CO₂ uptake or the whole concept of net zero falls apart.”
