The title and part of the lead sentence on the article below “world’s only carbon capture facility attached to a coal plant” aren’t correct or are misleading. There are at least two coal plants that have CO2 capture facilities that have operated successfully for years without subsidies, albeit they are niche projects that are small and don’t store CO2.
AES Warrior Run’s 180-MW coal plant near Cumberland, MD, captures a slip stream of CO2 for to produce food-grade CO2 for use in the beverage industry. Initially, the plant captured about 4% of its CO2 emissions but I think that may have increased the capture rate somewhat in the nearly 20 years that the facility has been operating.
Tuticorin Alkali Chemicals is capturing 60,000 tonnes/yr of CO2 from their 10-MW coal plant to produce soda ash in that state of Tamil Nadu, in south India. The capture facility was retrofitted to the coal plant around 2017.
