Third Annual Carbon Dioxide Removal Law & Policy Conference, Carbon Removal Deployment: Law and Policy from Planning to Project

The Institute for Carbon Removal Law & Policy at American University is pleased to announce the convening of the Third Annual Carbon Dioxide Removal Law & Policy conference on September 26, 2023. This year’s conference will be conducted in a hybrid format, with the onsite venue at American University’s Washington College of Law in Washington, DC. All sessions will also be streamed online.

Carbon dioxide removal developments have been unfolding at a lightning pace in the past few years, with the field rapidly emerging from the largely notional to a stage where it’s poised to begin making a substantive contribution to battling climate change. This year’s conference theme, Carbon Removal Deployment: Law and Policy from Planning to Project, seeks to capture the stage where we find ourselves in the context of the roles of law and policy in the field.

The purpose of this message is two-fold:

  • As a “Save the Date” for the conference. If you wish to be placed on our mailing list, please contact me. We expect that our registration platform will be operational by mid-July;
  • As a call for speakers for the four panels that we’ve developed for the conference:
    • The Legal and Policy Landscape for Biochar
    • The Role of International Treaty Regimes in Regulating Carbon Dioxide Removal Research and Deployment
    • The Role of Non-Governmental Certification Programs in Carbon Dioxide Removal
    • The emerging U.S. regulatory landscape for carbon dioxide removal

If you are interested in speaking at the conference, please submit an abstract to my attention by July 21 (preference is for early submissions), to wbu...@american.edu. We anticipate making decisions by July 30. Anyone slotted for a presentation will receive a registration fee waiver. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you wish to discuss potential topics also.
