With gas prices hitting levels that were unimaginable a year ago,
consumers are finally at the point that they are changing both their
driving habits, as well as the vehicles they buy.

"It's clear that gas prices are weighing heavily on car-buyers'
minds," said Edmunds.com’s Jesse Toprak

“There are a whole lot of Soccer-moms that brought home 7 passenger
vans and SUVs a year ago that are kicking them selves now”.

Rick Wagoner, CEO of GM, said "We at GM don't think this is a spike or
a temporary shift, a market shift to smaller vehicles in the U.S.
market is likely permanent”.
Wagoner said GM is "undertaking a strategic review of the Hummer
brand, to determine its fit with GM's evolving product portfolio" in
light of changing market conditions.

"At this point, we are considering all options for the Hummer
brand ... everything from a complete revamp of the product lineup to
partial or complete sale of the brand," he said.

Clearly Hummer product line is not the only concern for GM, it is just
a part of their moves in response to slumping sales of pickups and
SUVs brought on by high oil prices. All car companies are seeing a
decline in sales of their larger vehicles, the problem for GM,
Chrysler and Ford is that it was the sales of those very trucks that
was the only real proffit stream for the “Big-Three.”
