What is considered an Non-Owned Auto:

As an agent specializing in car insurance, there is not a day that
goes by that I do not get one or more calls inquiring about Non-Owners
car insurance.

Fist let me separate between Non - Owned Auto and Non owners
insurance.

Non- Owned Auto is a coverage associated with commercial policies.
Any vehicle that is not owned, borrowed, or leased by the insured, and
which is used primarily for a business purpose. This coverage is
needed by those who drive "Customer's cars", ie a Valet parking cars
for a restaurant.
Hired and Non- Owned coverage is a commercial coverage.

Non Owners is a coverage for an individual who does not drive a car
but still needs auto liability. This could be because the individual
is required to car sr22, or simply the person wants to be covered in
the event that they do dive a car. Often this type of insurance is
bought by those that need to rent cars, but do not own one.

Careful. I have heard people get some very bad advice on what is
covered under a non-owner policy. Unfortunately, I have seen people
get into very bad situations over this misunderstanding.

Non owners coverage is for cars you do not own AND are not a "Regular
customary driver". If you do not own a car but regularly drive a
friend's, roommates or family car, it is likely that the insurance
company will define you as a "Regular customary driver" on that car.
This even more likely if you live in the same home.
All drivers in a residence should either be listed on the policy or
excluded off of that policy.
