To begin, again my name is Manuel Canton and I was born in Miami,
Florida. My parents were Manuel Canton and Alicia Inestroza. My
father was born in Alhama de Almeria, Andalucia, Spain. My mother was
born Jesus de Otoro, Intibuca, Honduras. My paternal grandparents were
Manuel Canton and Maria Ufarte. They were both born in Alhama de
Almeria. My paternal great grandparents were Manuel Canton and Ana
Maria Morales Leiva, both born in Alhama de Almeria, as well as Esteban
Ufarte and Maria Lopez. They were both born in Almeria, Andalucia,
Spain.
Through research I have been able to locate my great great grandparents
on the Ufarte line, Gabriel Ufarte Panagua and Maria Ferera Lopez
Carmona. They were both born in Albox, Andalucia, Spain.
Soon I'll post other information that I have gathered.
My father immigrated to the United States in 1920. He left Spain on
January 31, 1920 aboard the S.S. Lopez y Lopez which sailed from
Malaga, Spain and arrived in New York's Ellis Island on February 8,
1920. He apparently lived in Brooklyn, New York, for several years
afterwards. The Ellis Island records show that Brooklyn was his point
of destination and the 1930 U.S. Census indicates that he was still
living there as of April 14, 1930.
The ship's manifest indicates that my father was married to an Antonia
Canton. Subsequent research found that her maiden name was Antonia
Salmeron Leiva. The census records indicate that she was 33 at that
time. Therefore, she was born in 1897. The census records show that
they had a daughter, my half-sister, Mary. At the time of the census
she was 8 years old. Therefore, she was born in 1922.
My records indicate that my grandfather came to the United States
looking for my father. He left Spain aboard the S.S. Santarem which
sailed from Havre, France on May 18, 1920 and arrived at New York's
Ellis Island on May 31, 1920. Along with my grandfather, was my
father's brother, my uncle, Joaquin. The ship's manifest indicates
that my grandfather was 52 at the time and my uncle was 16.
I would like to know what ever happened to Antonia and Mary. When I
visited the Wall of Honor located on Ellis Island, I found the name
Antonia Salmeron Canton. I have not been able to find out who
inscribed the name. However, maybe through this and other questions
will be answered.
