"There's only one Eartha Kitt (see video below). Unfortunately, there
are a zillion would-be sexpots covering Kitt's original 1953 recording
of this sultry plea to Mr. Claus to pony up the luxury goods. Yes,
Kitt was at her feline best purring to the big guy a tongue-in-cheek
seduction ("just slip a sable under the tree, for me"). Since then,
everybody from Madonna to Miss Piggy has vamped it up. This time of
year, the stores are alive with piped-in "Santa Baby" renditions as
smarmily, self-consciously "naughty" as the Pussycat Dolls (natch,
they did their own version). Whose take is most atrocious? First
runner-up: Heidi Klum, whose "SB" snippet on Victoria's Secret
commercials has all the sizzling sex appeal of Knackwurst mit
Sauerkraut. But top honors go to Calista Flockhart, who crooned it on
"Ally McBeal" and on the "A Very Ally Christmas" CD. Combine
Flockhart's girlishly simpering idea of va-va-voom (eww!) with her
apparent lack of singing ability (oww!), and you get a "Santa Baby"
fit for the Christmas Music Hall of Shame."
Of course, I strongly disagree.
