Hello all, have missed seeing many of you out there. I don't ride as much as I used to, and am rather dedicated to new father mode for the time being. I hate to make a post of this type instead of seeing some of you on the road.

Someone broke into our condo garage on Monday Nov 28th overnight and took an angle grinder to a bunch of high end locks (NY kyptonite, hiplock, heavy chain). They made off with my Rocky Mountain Soul 20, which is not a very expensive bike, but was supposed to at least allow me some fun during this winter on the trails. They had to gaul to post it to Kijiji (ad still up, archived below). I got in touch with the person who listed it and they have already sold it and claimed they were just a "middle man". Police are dragging their feet as expected. With a $500 insurance deductible and not much faith in our condo security, I'm left wondering if I should bother thinking about alternatives for the time being.

It has my front mudguard on it and the Bateman's sticker near the BB on the downtube (can be spotted in the listing above). I have the serial number and original receipt too. It was a demo bike from 2019... came with a free pink bottle cage which I asked to have returned to me, but no luck. lol :)

Thanks for your time reading this.

Any update, Paul, about whether you were able to track and get the bike back, or track down where it's gone?

Thanks for checking in, but sadly nothing significant to report yet. Police have all the info they need, but not holding my breath it will make a difference. Despite the thief informing the bike was sold, the ad is still up on Kijiji. At this point, I feel like I'm just getting trolled by a situation which favours the thief more than the bike's rightful owner.

Maybe I'll be lucky. While rare, bike's have been retrieved before 😃

Back in 1987 or 88, a friend of mine bought a Shogun MTB from Cycle Logic in North Toronto.  It was a strange bike with a 24” front wheel and a 26” rear wheel.
He spent a bunch of money upgrading it to Deore XT, and then one day, while the bike was leaning on a wall out front of the Pet Valu where he worked (he never locked it!), some kids ran up and stole it.

2 years later, I was out for a ride with friend and saw the bike.  We were about 10km away from where it was stolen, and the kid riding had gone to a school to play ball in the yard.  It was such a rare and unusual bike, and I instantly recognized it.  I called the cops, we hid in the bushes for several minutes until the cops showed up, and my friend got his bike back!  I don’t think the chain had been oiled since it was stolen…but a happy ending for all years later.  Well…the thief was pretty unhappy. He tried to pretend that it wasn’t his bike, but me and my friend were all witness, and they took him in.

I hope you have similar luck, with a little less time between now and recovery.

C

I hope so, Paul. I'm really sorry this happened. I hope you're able to recover it at some point.

I actually wonder if the police will follow up with the guy, given that he gave his phone number.

Thanks a lot, good people. Really appreciate you sharing that story, Colin. While it's not looking great for the moment, you never know what will happen down the road. One small consolation I'm trying to tell myself is that maybe the person who bought the bike is none the wiser and will enjoy it for now :P

I filed a formal report with the police, so they have all the information they need aside from the security camera footage at our condo.

Hope to see some of you on the road again soon,
Paul
