A new episode of JOURNEY TO PLANET EARTH:
Plan B: Mobilizing to Save Civilization < the 12th in the award-winning PBS
series. Matt Damon returns as host and narrator.

³Plan B² is based on the book by environmental visionary Lester Brown. Shot
on location around the world, their film's message is clear and unflinching
< either confront the realities of climate change or suffer the consequences
of lost civilizations and failed political states. Ultimately, ³Plan B²
provides audiences with a glimpse into a new and emerging economy based upon
renewable resources as well as realistic strategies to avoid the growing
threat of global warming. Appearing with Lester Brown are Nobel Laureate
Paul Krugman, Pulitzer Prize winner Tom Friedman, former Governor and
Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt, along with other scholars and
scientists.

You can preview ³Plan B² or any other JOURNEY TO PLANET EARTH episode online
free for 30 days. As a bonus, a copy of the accompanying book, ³Plan B² by
Lester Brown (W.W. Norton, 368 pp), is included with the purchase of the

ABOUT JOURNEY TO PLANET EARTH

Partially funded by the National Science Foundation, JOURNEY TO PLANET EARTH
is the only series that helps students and educators understand and cope
with the complexities of developing an agenda to deal with the most
important environmental issues of the 21st century. Through an
interdisciplinary approach, these programs reach beyond the physical
sciences and draw connections to politics, economics, sociology, and
history.

The School Library Journal calls it ³a must-buy² that ³superbly illustrates
the desperate need for a balance between the needs of the people and the
environment.

Episodes come on DVD, are closed captioned for accessibility, and include:
>
> * Full-length version (55 min)
> * Abridged version (25 min) for use with shorter class periods
> * Chaptered case studies
>
JOURNEY TO PLANET EARTH includes the twelve episodes.

Lexus and Scholastic Environmental Contest for Middle and High School
Students
Lexus has joined with Scholastic to present the Lexus Eco Challenge, a
program designed to inspire and empower middle and high school students to
learn about the environment and take action to improve it. This fall,
students are invited to participate in the fourth annual Eco Challenge for a
chance to win part of $500,000 in grants and scholarships.

Middle and high school teams comprised of five to ten students and one
teacher advisor are invited to participate in one or both of the two initial
challenges, each addressing different environmental elements < land/water
and air/climate. For each of the challenges, teams will define an
environmental issue that is important to them, develop an action plan to
address the issue, implement the plan, and report the results. The
submission deadline for Challenge One (Land/Water) is November 3, 2010. The
deadline for Challenge Two (Air/Climate) is January 19, 2011.

Each of the two challenges will have sixteen winning teams < eight middle
school and eight high school teams. The winning teams will each receive a
total of $10,000 in scholarships and grants to be shared among the students,
teacher, and school.  In mid-February 2011, the winning teams from the first
two challenges will be invited to participate in the Final Challenge. Teams
will be asked to reach beyond the local community and inspire environmental
action around the world through innovative ideas that are communicated to a
wide audience. From the Final Challenge entries, eight first-place teams and
two grand-prize-winning teams will be selected. Each of the eight
first-place teams will receive a total of $15,000 in grants and
scholarships, and the two grand-prize-winning teams will each receive
$30,000. The money will be shared by the students, their teacher advisors,
and their schools.
