Hello All,

I have a few announcements below:

1) DNA Educator Symposium

Saturday, March 6, 2010
9am-5pm, Amgen Seattle
Register Now! http://www.nwabr.org/education/dnaleap.html

Middle and high school science teachers are invited to join us for a special
professional development day presented by the DNA Life Sciences Education
Advancement Partnership (DNA-LEAP)! Come and learn about genetic resources
available through some of the Northwest's most highly recognized outreach
organizations.

Separate Ostrands¹ are available for the middle school/introductory level
and the high school level. Each participant will participate in four
different 1-hour sessions and learn about the resources offered by all the
participating outreach groups. We are excited to announce Edward Ramos,
Ph.D., research fellow and a science policy analyst at the National Human
Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), National Institutes of Health, as our
keynote speaker.

Space is limited to the first 40 applications. Please note that a $20
refundable deposit is required to secure your place in the symposium.
Educators who work with students from backgrounds underrepresented in
science are especially encouraged to apply. A complimentary lunch will be
provided and clock hours will be available for purchase.

Professional Development Sessions Will Be Offered By:

? Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Science Education Partnership

? Northwest Association for Biomedical Research

? Seattle Biomedical Research Institute, BioQuest

? University of Washington, Department of Genome Sciences Education Outreach

Become your state's national DNA school for 2010! National DNA Day is April
23, 2010. Each year, the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI)
sponsors the DNA Day Chatroom. This year, you and your students can join
genomic researchers in an online chatroom on Friday, April 23 from 8:00 am
EST until 6:00 pm EST. If you are interested in having your school register
or know of a school that may be interested in registering, please contact
Carla Easter at the NHGRI at eas...@mail.nih.gov or at 301-594-1364. For
more information on the chatroom and to learn more about DNA Day visit:
www.genome.gov/Dnaday.

2) Grants and Scholarships for K-12 Teachers

The Puget Sound Section of the American Chemical Society intends to give
several one-year grants of up to $500 to K-12 teachers in the section¹s
geographic area for the following activities:

* Supplies and equipment for high school students doing chemistry/science
demonstrations at K-9 schools.

* Expenditures for selected chemistry/science journals and books, including
safety and waste disposal texts.

* Supplies and equipment for K-12 teachers developing new experiments for
the chemistry/science curriculum.

* Expenditures for K-12 teachers to attend chemistry/science courses,
symposia or institutes. Preference will be given to teachers who are
extending their range of competence.

To apply for a grant or scholarship, please submit a one-page proposal for
these programs to the address below. Be concise, clearly describing your
proposal and detailing how specific monies will be used, along with a
corresponding timetable. If matching funds will be used to fund the
proposal, please indicate this. The ACS Education Committee will review and
award proposals twice yearly. A one-page summary of accomplishments will be
due within six months of receipt of grant money. Deadline for proposals:
April 30, 2010 or October 8, 2010. The Puget Sound Education Committee
membership includes: Clarita C. Bhat (Chair), Arden Forrey (University of
Washington), David Munch (Seattle Central Community College) and Jim
Patterson (North Seattle Community College).

Send the proposal by mail to:
Dr. Clarita C. Bhat
Chair, Education Committee, Puget Sound ACS
8002 53rd Ave. West
Mukilteo, WA 98275

Or electronically to:

3) U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad

Students competing in the USNCO are eligible to be selected as members of
the United States team for the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO). For
the past twenty three years, the United States has sent a team of four
students to compete with nations around the world at the IChO. The students
participate in both theoretical and laboratory examinations over several
days. Gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded to the best performers,
and the IChO provides students the opportunity to interact with their peers
from other countries. The 2010 international event will be held in Tokyo,
Japan, July 19-28, 2010.

Some deadlines:

Students must apply by March 26th. Extensions to this deadline may be
possible and will be announced later.

National Exam will be administered between April 22 and 26. Exact date and
location to be determined soon.

Local examinations will be administered in March. These will be necessary
only if there are more than 2 students from one school, or more than the
maximum allowed for our section.

Participation Rules:

1. All students who take the USNCO national examination MUST BE U.S.
CITIZENS on the day it is taken. (They MUST BE eligible for a U.S.
passport.) Green card holders are not eligible.
2. Regularly enrolled high school students who will graduate no earlier than
the spring of 2010 are eligible.
3. A student's date of birth must be after July 31, 1990.
4. No more than two students per teacher or per high school may be nominated
to take the national exam. In the case of magnet programs or split
enrollment, students' school is defined as the high school where students
take science class.
5. Eligible students who have previously attended the study camp
automatically qualify for the national exam and do not count against the
limit on number of eligible students from their local section or school.
6. Winners of gold medal at the International Chemistry Olympiad are not
eligible to compete in subsequent USNCO study camps. Winners of silver or
bronze medals are eligible to return and automatically qualify for the
national exam; they do not count against the limit on number of eligible
students from their local section or school.
7. Students who have taken advanced placement courses in chemistry are
eligible. Likewise, students who have received credit for college level
courses (limited to no more than two semesters or three quarters beyond
general chemistry) are eligible.
8. A student may participate only in the competition of the section in which
the student's high school is located. If the section is not participating,
the USNCO national office will assign the student to a section.
9. A student who participates in the Physics Olympiad study camp, the
Mathematics Olympiad study camp, or the Biology Olympiad study camp is not
eligible to participate in the Chemistry Olympiad study camp during the same
summer.
