GOVERNOR LAMONT AND CONNECTICUT DEMOCRATS LAUNCH NEW PUSH TO HOLD UTILITIES ACCOUNTABLE AND LOWER ENERGY COSTS
HARTFORD - Connecticut Democrats applaud Governor Ned Lamont and Democratic lawmakers for their proposals to lower electricity bills. The Governor announced his plan today alongside Democratic leaders and members of the Energy and Technology Committee, including Co-Chairs State Senator Norm Needleman and State Representative Jonathan Steinberg.
For too long, Connecticut families and businesses have been forced to absorb high electric bills as monopoly utilities pad profits and pass cost burdens on to ratepayers. Connecticut Democrats are making it clear that the status quo is not good enough.
The Governor’s key proposals would strengthen oversight of utility companies, require greater accountability for the costs they pass on to customers, give consumer advocates stronger tools to fight unjustified rate hikes, and encourage more competition and innovation in the energy market.
These proposals build on the actions Gov. Lamont and Democratic lawmakers have already taken to lower costs, protect consumers, and bring long-overdue accountability to Connecticut’s utility system. Now, Democrats are pushing for the next step – a system that puts ratepayers first, demands transparency from utilities, encourages actual competition, and stops monopolistic companies from treating Connecticut families like a captive revenue stream.
Meanwhile, Ryan Fazio and Republican leadership continue to remain silent on the largest acute driver of energy cost increases, Donald Trump’s reckless war in Iran. In little more than 3 months, the war has cost consumers more than $100 billion in increased expenses and sent inflation skyrocketing to 4.2%.
Statement from CT Dems Spokesperson Ian Clarke:
“At the same time Donald Trump’s reckless war is driving energy costs up for families across the country, Connecticut Democrats are focused on actually lowering bills here at home. While Ryan Fazio and the state GOP continue to remain silent about the catastrophic impact Trump’s war is having on the prices Connecticut families pay, Governor Lamont and Democratic lawmakers are doing the work: taking on utility companies, demanding accountability, and fighting to make our state a more affordable place to live.”
