MURPHY, SCHUMER, CROW TO HOLD PRESS CALL ON INTRODUCTION OF THE NOPE ACT, A BICAMERAL BILL TO PROTECT AMERICANS FROM POLITICAL PROSECUTIONS, FREE SPEECH CRACKDOWNS
***HAPPENING NOW, WEDNESDAY, January 14th at 3 PM***
WASHINGTON–U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), U.S. Representative Jason Crow (D-Colo.-6) and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), along with representatives from Protect Democracy and Americans Against Government Censorship, on Wednesday will hold a press call on the introduction of the No Political Enemies (NOPE) Act, a bicameral bill to protect individuals and organizations, including non-profits, faith groups, media outlets, and educational institutions, from politically motivated harassment and prosecution by the federal government. As President Trump continues his unprecedented campaign of political retribution, including the targeting of Fed Chair Jerome Powell, the ongoing political prosecution of Members of Congress, and the DOJ’s December announcement of sweeping investigations into left-leaning groups and donors. The speakers will discuss how the NOPE Act would provide all Americans with the legal tools to fight back against Trump’s attacks on free speech and create criminal liability for federal officials who weaponize the government to target Americans’ First Amendment rights.
