Hey guys.

The Cape Times has asked us to put out a call for coders & designers, and other techies to help them build the region's 1st real 'news app' looking at politics in the Western Cape.

Cape Times' Janet Heard says they have loads scraped data already, to power the app. They need developers and UI / UX designers to help build some prototypes. The data that is available includes:

a) All reported crowd incidents / protests / strikes service deliveries recorded by police

b) Detailed voter registration data for all provincial wards

c) Detailed results for the 2009 & 2011 elections, + all by-elections

d) Access to the most recent census data

Some of the ideas for possible apps and/or web projects includes:

i) An Elections2014 app

ii) A protest tracker app

CapeTimes is also keen to hear your ideas for projects, using the data they have. They're keen to find partners to experiment with the possibilities during the EditorsLab hackathon in Cape Town this week Friday / Saturday (Sept 6 & 7). The hackathon winners will get an all-expense paid ticket to the Global Data Journalism Awards in Barcelona, in June 2014.

Anyhow interested in chatting to Janet, can reach her on janet.heard (at) inl (dot) co (dot) za
