Hi everyone

Although not strickly Java, I am assuming this topic may be permissible since its relevance may apply to many of us.

Does anyone know of any Cape Town based courses (or other remote brilliant ones for that matter) that offer some kind of certification as 'Software Archtiect'?

I know that the definition of this is probably quite fuzzy, but working for a corporate that likes to tick all the check-boxes I have been offered to do such course as e-learning (with the hope that eventually I'd be able to assume that title), and I wanted to check that I have not missed anything 'local' or more hands on.

Thanks!

Carl

If you want something Java specific you could have a look at the Oracle certifications. (Used to be Sun certifications)

They are self study and then you write a test in a local testing centre (multiple choice - website based test)... and you submit an assignment

Hi Carl,

The following are both highly regarded in our field, both certificates are from recognized organizations:

If you are interested in the non-programming side of software architecture, then you should look at http://www.togaf.org/  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Open_Group_Architecture_Framework)

If you want more hand on coding then look at Oracle Certified Masters course:

Cheers

Hi everyone  - Thanks for all the replies - its great to be able to rely on the Jug for useful info.

The Oracle course looks like fairly comprehensive test of Java Skills. I'm not sure that I my current employers use a quarter of the tech involved so I suppose that is why this option is not considered at the moment, and Java is also considered as just one of many technologies. The requirement seems to be a of a more generic nature- although not that much that Chris's mention, the Togaf would be a consideration. (it seems very useful as a reference, but as you mention rather for the non-programming side).

This is the course that I am currently considering: http://www.sei.cmu.edu/training/V07.cfm?wt.mc_id=pc1. , and after looking at other options it seems like a suitable solution.

Brian  - let us know when your course becomes available :)

Thanks!

I used to teach the Sun Architecture course - it was OK, but a lot too
much "Sun's take on RUP for Architecture".

IMHO TOGAF is all about the money. (Read that as you will.)

I have run much more loosely structured architecture workshops, and
those have been some of the most successful (as decided by participants)
facilitation work I ever did. I think it is much more useful to have a
bunch of experienced designers sit around a table talking in a
semi-structured way about what has worked/not worked for them. Probably
doesn't come with a certificate though ;-)

Mike, I'm sure you can issue your own certificate as in "Mike Morris
Certified". I for one would place far more value on one of those than
an "Oracle Certified BLA" :-)

:D Thanks for that, Heinz. Would Sanlam agree? Not so much, methinks ;)
