hmm .. there have been a number of guys that have tried this .. very
tough to maintain dimensions of extruded ABS as we know well from
printing with it. The commercial guys extrude directly into a water
bath ...

maybe something mechanical to finish a crude extrusion would work?

Cool, something we were going to do anyway;-)  Now we can win a prize!

Looked at the challenge,  and the tolerance on the filament to be created is tight, at
+/- .01mm (+/- .00039").   

Also need to mix colorant, anyone know what colorants would be compatible with ABS and/or PLA?

Also need bags of ABS and PLA pellets.  (it makes the challenge "easier" in that it doesn't require using recycled material!)

The $250 price limit is helpful as it limits what you would put into a extruder;-)

This is interesting.  I would like to build something just to try to extrude 1.75mm filament.

The Challenge:
Drive down the cost of filament by creating a machine.  The first team/person to build an open source filament extruder for less than $250 in components can take ABS or PLA resin pellets, mix them with colorant, and extrude a 1.75mm +/- .01mm filament that can be used in a 3D printer is declared the winner. The winner of the competition will be objectively determined by the first one to upload a solution to the here on iStart.

In its simplest form a functional extruder must have a heated barrel and and nozzle with means for feeding the raw material (pellets)  into the barrel with enough force to push the heated material through the nozzle.  If anyone was interested in doing this, I suggest focusing on getting a functional nozzle/barrel as a starting point as I suspect that feeding of the raw material with enough force to extrude is not really the tough part of this challenge. 

As John pointed out in his message, the cooling in a controlled fashion is a big part of the puzzle as well.

I have other thoughts as well that I will try and get out to everyone shortly.
